According to the wiring diagram the rear window defroster is grounded on the passenger side of the body. On my car there is no wire. I assume that all I have to do is get a piece of wire with a spade connector and ground it to the body somewhere. Can someone confirm this for me? Also, are the rubber boots that cover the wires available? I have searched the usually sources but cant seem to find them.

Theoretically you are correct but the defroster grids do degrade over time so the likelihood of it actually working once you get the electrics sorted out is still pretty low.

Agreed. You can test the grid with an Ohm meter . Basically you put the meter leads on each end of each line and check the resistance reading . It needs to be a certain amount for conductivity. You'll have to check what the stats are , but a lot of lines will probably read zero anyway.
