I did a valve adjust last night and it worked out fine. I bought a box of gaskets years ago, maybe 20 years and down to my last 4.
From experience of getting my driveway full of oil I always idle the car for a while and check for leaks. Glad I don't have heater boxes !
Passengers side no leak. Drivers side leak, took it off, looked good, put it back, leaked, got tired, Permatexed it. Went to bed. Will start it again tonight.
For me valve cover gaskets have always been hit or miss. Will old Cork Gasket get hard. This is on my T-4 but similar problems on my T-1's
Also are there better gaskets then cork???? Maybe silicone rubber?
BTY check for cover being square with my fingers all around and tapped with hammer to make sure. _________________ email: [email protected]

Yeah, over time. Even worse when they expand. I try to make sure I store them on a flat surface too, so they don't warp. _________________ "A petrol engine can start readily, run smoothly and give every appearance of being in good order, without necessarily being in good tune." - Colin Campbell, "The Sportscar Engine" |

Yes...they do get hard over time. How hard depends on what rubber was used in the cork mixture.
And....try to buy known good brands like Elring and Victor Reinz....not just cheap generic China gaskets. There are MANY type of rubberized cork. Not all are made with rubber that withstands oil, solvents and heat. Ray |

If this is a type 4 confirm the little bitty logos (inspection stamps) are upside down when mounted, some (not all) type 4 covers hang up on a bit of the head casting when the logos are upright. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I generally soak them in water before using them. They swell up and seal better. The moisture is not much either. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

It's near the middle, easier to see the slight outie dent it usually makes from the clean inner (oily) side, it's ~1/4" dia. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

This is on a NOS type 127 (T4) industrial motor:

Here is a VW factory valve cover install. All four covers on the two engines had the VW symbol upside down, and the bend in the bale pointing up.

I bought a huge (100's)box of nos gaskets at a shop auction a few years ago. They were a bit dry.
They didn't seal as well as they should have. _________________ Drag bus! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2MOVmKdhX4

Perhaps the clips have lost their springyness. If you can easily remove them from the heads and/or easily spring them into place over the cover chances are they need adjusting. Bending both ends in a bit so that refitting them requires they are stretched across the head and comparatively difficult to refit should sort it. |

Guys thanks for all the help. Soaked the gaskets, turned the VW Logo upsided down.
Zed the clips are like bear traps, I need a wrecking bar to put them back.
OK so I exaggerated !!! But they are fine. Thanks.
Been raining in NY forever so just idled it for a few minutes --- Looks good.
If any issues I will get back. It is such a simple thing that you just have to take care in doing. _________________ email: [email protected]
