Hey looking for some help here. What hose goes goes in the top 2 pics and where does the 3 pic go? This is a 2.1 out of a Syncro.
Thanks

Googling "2.1 Vanagon hose diagram" brings up a bunch of images like this one

https://ww2-secure.justanswer.com/uploads/boarderline014/2011-10-02_151652_ja.jpg

BTW, your thermostat housing cover is rotated 90 degrees clockwise from normal.

Syncro layout is different.. pretty sure it's on there correctly.

Like I said, not normal. Those Syncro guys are a bunch of weirdos I tell ya. Laughing

Yea I see that schematic on 19.11 of the Bentley. But I was wondering if there is something more specific for Syncro a going into a 2WD.

Just change out your thermostat housing and hook everything up like it was in your 2wd originally.

If it was a Syncro 2.1 going into what was a 2.1 2WD van it would be pretty simple to adapt the cooling bits. Trying to put a Syncro 2.1 into what came as 1.9 van is more complicated. (This assumes USA/CA model Vanagons. In other markets plenty of 1.9 vans came with what we here consider to be a 2.1 cooling system.)

Yea, it’s going into an ‘85.

Mark,

Is there anything out there to read up on it?

I'm not aware of any comprehensive guide to what you wish to do.

That 2 pipe assembly in one of your photos isn't something you should use in your 2wd van.

The 2 large hoses from a 1.9 setup can't be just connected to that 2.1 thermostat housing, if that is what you are asking. The cooling systems have important differences that force you to use almost all of one or all of the other, at the engine end.

I would just tend to buy a 2.1 hose kit and build a 2.1 setup using it.

I agree, but if he has plastic long pipes it isn't as simple. He needs to study how a 2.1 system is set up at the engine end. That curved 2 metal pipe piece he has isn't part of what he needs to do for a 2wd, it is a Syncro part. None of the 1.9 engine hoses are what he needs. He needs a few 2.1 hoses and a 2.1 coolant tower for a 2wd. Then he needs to shorten the 1.9 long cooling pipes to 2.1 lengths at the engine end.

Thank you! That’s what I needed to hear. On to studying a 2.1...

Don't know what the difference is in the plastic and steel pipes for a 1.9L, but when I shoved a 2.1L into my 83 1/2, for the hose from the tower I used a flex hose that was 1 1/2 and one end and 1 1/4 on the other, the hose looks to be about 12" long.

For the hose to the thermostat housing I just used the standard 2wd hose and used a 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 radiator hose bushing at the pipe end with two clamps to help hold things in place.

They don't connect directly to the engine but "T" into the hoses to the front heater.
