My beloved weekender either needs new head gaskets or a new engine. Considering my options, one of which is to cut bait after 14 years of ownership and sell her. She’s pretty clean with 115k miles.
I know this will be a controversial question , but how much can I reasonably expect to get if I sell her as is?

Hello, welcome to the Samba. Where is the luggage rack section? I am always looking for vanagons with bad engines or transmissions. Problem is, sellers often think their van is worth more than it really is with a bad engine.
I would try some Subaru Coolant conditioner and bleed the cooling system properly. See if that helps the heads seal up some. Good WBX engines are available used, which is probably the cheapest quickest way to go.
It has more value if the engine is tight. _________________ ☮️ |

Thanks.
I just removed the luggage rack to clean it up, replace the rubber, etc. That's the dilemma - spend the money to fix it and get a better payoff (or keep it), or sell it for less than I want. Too many memories to let this go for too little! |

Is that rust or dirt where the luggage rack was taken off?
We need way more detail to give you an accurate appraisal in current condition... but the long answer short is...
It will be worth considerably more in running condition than not. _________________ 1990 Multivan - "Ohana"

Where in Maine, I'll be on vacation in Acadia in 5 weeks... don't decide until I'm able to come and buy it
Will fixing the Vanagon bring you joy? Will you think more about how much it costs when using it vs. enjoying the moment?
I hope you fix it and continue to find joy in ownership. |

The california premium is crazy. |
I'm in So Cal. Some of those prices you listed are crazy high. One van in particular has a Subaru conversion, new interior, and has been for sale for over a year.
Here, a running stock pop top weekender will sell immediately when listed for $10k. When listed for $15k, they linger for awhile, but sell. I don't think they sell at $20k (unless with a new Subaru or tons of upgrades).
There is one in San Diego with a tired 1.9L and bodywork for $6500.
With no motor and no rust, I would quickly pay $5k. _________________ Current:

That appears to be a very good value.
I am not in the market. I just bought a second one 6 months ago. My family would have me committed if I bought another one
I will forward this to a friend who is shopping for one.
Just realized it has quite a bit of rust. Doesn't show picture of body panel behind the stove. _________________ Current:
