Greetings, everyone! Recently, I’ve seen a few new members digging in and participating in the diagnosing of various bus issues around here. Kudos to you folks, keep it up!
To keep the spirit of learning alive, I propose a game. Every week, I will post a thread as a new VW owner who is having a problem with their bus, (occasionally using confusing words and “great advice I get from Facebook.”) To those of you who read threads and do not participate much because you fear being wrong or giving bad advice, this thread is for you!! To those of you who can diagnose from a thousand miles away, please watch from a distance. Experienced mechanics are welcome to start their own thread. (Teachers' lounge, anyone?)
Rules:
1) Ask questions, make suggestions, and learn! (Don’t be afraid!)
2) Every thread scenario has actually happened.
3) Newbies only. You know who you are.
4) No prizes yet, but when you win, you're banned from the next few!
See you on the “road.” Game 3 is in the next post!

Howdy, I just finished my first oil change on my new bus, and now the engine is making a loud sound whenever I shift or drive fast. I didn’t change the filter, so I feel like my engine might be ruined…

The mesh filter at the bottom of the engine with the six bolts.

Shoot some expanding foam in each ear to stop random thoughts from rattling around in the empty chamber between them.
Hope this helps. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Answer: Never done one!
Robbie's note: not relevant to the solution, though valve adjustments don't really just change spontaneously at the exact same time as an oil change… _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Dude - for the umpteenth time....
What year bus?, what engine? blah blah blah..... damn... how many times do we need to ask this?!?
SO, I believe your oil change most likely has nothing to do with a shifting noise.
How long have you owned this bus and have you ever actually shifted it before? If this was your first oil change, this must be a new bus to you. Do you even know how to drive it?
I suspect you got a wonky shift coupler. Get a new one - but weld the seams before you install it and don't forget to wire in the grub screw (ask me how I know THAT tidbit?).

1971 Westy, 1600 dual port, H30/31pict Solex carb.
The noise is loudest when the engine spins down, like when shifting or revving at a stoplight. Volume depends on engine speed, so I don't think it's in the shift mechanism.
I've had it for about three weeks. You guys helped me figure out my idle issue two weeks ago. I didn't learn to drive stick in this bus, but in a different bus last month. This one drives a lot smoother, but has trouble shifting in to second sometimes.
Robbie's notes: the noise is mechanical, and though "the OP" used incorrect terminology, the shifter notes are welcome.

Dissecting that info tells us we have a Type 1, likely 68-71. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

No, but Ratwell said I should be using 20w50 instead of 10w40, and my uncle said use 30w so I compromised.

Install drain plug before refilling engine with oil. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Pardon me- Bentley calls it the "oil strainer" and there are six "nuts!" _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

The oil is about a centimeter over the full line when I check it after filling the gas tank. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

That makes sense because 3 qt is about half a qt too much. I don’t know, however, whether being overfilled can cause a mechanical noise like you described. Since the level is wrong, you might try draining the level down to the correct amount to see if that helps. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle |
