Congrats!

I ran a similar path back in the 70's and 80's.

Once I hit Service manager 1982/83 it became obvious I had a no win job.

The dealership owner wasn't happy because he wanted more money.

The mechanics weren't happy because every work order wasn't a high profit task.

The Customers..... well they aren't ever happy are they?

The manufacturer complained about warranty claims.

The parts guy? He didn't give a rip.

The Wife? "You're never home"

The choices were......
Alcohol
Wife beating
Or
Quit

I chose to quit and entered a less stressful occupation.

Married 43 years, I'm sober and quite relaxed........

Worst Job in the world has to be "VW Service Writer"
I'm sure there are actually worse jobs, but I can't think of any.
I watched a Indian guy rip a VW Service Writer a new asshole around 1999 or 2000, I don't remember for sure.
The place was a good VW Dealer as far as repairs and warranty work was concerned,
The guy had no right to rip anyone like that.
Turnover for VW Service Writers was/is pretty high.

Congrats on the promotion. Best of luck.

I'm retired now. My attitude towards my job was that it helped me get the things I wanted out of life, but that it did not define who I was as a person. I felt that my employer and I had a deal: I did what they asked me to do, they sent me a check, we were good. After 38 years, although I screwed up a couple of times (and they forgave me), I felt I gave them value for money.

I hope you continue to have a fruitful and productive relationship with your employer.

It's nice to know that there are companies out there that appreciate and will "reward" hard work. Unfortunately the company I work for doesn't see it that way. We had a saying, "You're reward for good work is more work". If you ever get involved in how a church is run you'll learn another accurate saying, "20% of the people do 80% of the work". I've been with this company for 30+ years and worked in 3 different departments, but they are all managed the same way. If someone would ask me what they need to do to "stand out" I would tell them they need to excel in 2 skills. Lying and ass kissing. That gets you in the clique real fast and the sky is the limit.

There was an interesting article in one of those "Dear Abby" columns recently that pointed out that today people don't want to be told the truth, they want to be told what they want to hear. My boss retired a few months ago and guys were lining up to take his spot. His advice to them was, "you gotta be willing to play the game". I can't work like that and I won't compromise my integrity for a promotion.

In the private sector I would imagine smaller businesses better appreciate and reward employees because there are not multiple layers of management and politics to derail recognition. The military and most government service jobs have a more level playing field if you meet all the benchmarks, extra points for minority status, but even then if you don’t meet the marks by a certain age you get passed over.

When you work for a very large corporation you will see it does not matter. Case in point the thousands of GM employees who are but pawns in the big scheme of things. The old timers told me and it’s proven true when they said “ don’t be the first guy to finish the job and don’t be the last and you’ll do fine”. The Japanese said it a different way, “The nail that sticks up gets pounded down”.

My wife worked for a major insurance company and at that time even though it was fortune 100 it was privately held. Then it went public and new management came it and slowly turned up the heat. Near the end it got to the point where they monitored time spent in bathroom. People ate at their desks and some of the women had bladder control issues, didn’t matter to company if they didn’t meet stats they were out. Those jobs are all gone now offshored to lowest bidder maybe India.

Wait till you experience being involved in a merger you’ll see how much they love you. They had another purge here right before Christmas. One lower level supervisor received notice they were being “right sized” while on vacation. Think of that, you leave on vacation happy and the receive a phone call telling you don’t bother coming back. So if you think going to work and kissing ass and belonging to the right cliques, masons,Shriners, elks, odd fellows etc is gonna benefit you don’t be so sure.

As long as the cliques are in charge it will matter. Once the clique loses power all bets are off.

My employer employs 7000 on site and 10,000 overall, so I am just a number outside the clique. It's a family run non union business, but some outside the family have climbed the ladder of power. I once said to the owners daughter that all I see getting promoted are the lairs, ass kissers, backstabbers & thieves, so what should inspire someone to be an honest and self motivated worker here? She didn't have an answer.

The irony of it is that now they have reached the bottom of the work pool as far as workers go and the "culture" as they like to call it is going downhill, so they've been having meetings with those who have 25+ years and asking us to "instill integrity in the next generation of employees". I had to work 5 years before I got a 2nd weeks vacation. Now the new hires get 2 weeks right from day 1. Integrity starts at the top IMO.

I worked for same company for 40.5 years (at least long enough to choose a nice lithium 18 volt Milwaukee drill kit as 40-year service award). So at 63 was without a job, did get 52 weeks severance pay, plus I had 2 pensions plus 401k, and 3 weeks left to work.

HR Director - who I never even heard of before - told me the company provided outplacement job service assistance, and I asked her "what planet do you live on, companies rarely hire anyone 63 years old. She said she could escort me to my office if I liked, and I told her that she did not have to worry about me "going postal". She said that "was inappropriate", and I stuck my finger in her face and told her "No, JoAnne - when an employee has put in over 4 decades and doesn't rate getting a say in when his retirement would be - THAT'S INAPPROPRIATE".

I guess that also served as my exit interview !!!

That's annoying.
If 5 years is now 3 weeks, I hope they retroactively upgraded everyone once the new hire policy was in place.
Otherwise, it seems like a big F you to the current people.

Nope. 10 years is still the 3 week vacation mark. 20 years is still the 4 week vacation mark, & 30 years is 5 weeks.

For years this company had us by the balls. They had applicants out the wazoo so you could be replaced in a heartbeat. Now the pendulum has swung the other way. Business is booming and there are minimal applicants so they are trying to entice anyone and everyone to apply and stay with the company. Other then attendance issues which are black & white, they are frightened to death to fire someone because of lawsuits, bad press, no quality replacements, training time, unemployment fees, etc. To say they are desperate for help is an understatement. They are having job fairs hours away trying to entice people to sign on and move to the area.

I work for a place with over 100,000 employees with outlets all over the world. The problem then is while you may rise to a level within a division there are multiple silos with duplicate positions. You could be outstanding, well liked, respected and none of this matters when new management comes on board with their own people in place. Bye bye. The union guys are harder to run off but there are tools in the toolbox to make them leave as well. There is no integrity, it’s ROI for shareholders, employees are shit, expendable. One of the senior management people referred to them as “ A brick in our backpack”.

Funny you should say that. My buddy works for another company. He's in middle management. He sees his workers as people who have a family to feed, a house to pay for, kids to put thru school, etc. His boss told him that he's looking at it wrong. His boss refers to the workers as "resources, not people". That's cold. My buddy says about his bosses that it's all about their stock options and whoever they step on, to bad.

Come on -we are all expendable.

You want to see what is bad...find out about McNamarra's Morons during the Vietnam war. They took these people to war so college kids can dodge the draft.

The Vietnam memorial in DC is said to have about 15 - 30% of those names are those.

It will trully disgust you how we treat each other.
