|
|
For water cooled engines, I (like many others) am bothered by the excessive vibration of the alternator. Seems like it's sticking way up high without much support. Any rough running engine will compound the problem. It got so bad on my engine, the previous owners suffered a broken off boss from the block casting. Not only that, but their use of the GoWesty alternator bracket band-aid idea was only partly successful; the bracket broke on the 90* bend. I have since welded that back into one piece, but short of disassembling the engine and having the broken boss TIG welded back up and a new hole machined in, I'm left with more chance for failure.
I decided to try something new. I have no idea if this is the right thing to do, or how long it will last. But my additional support now stops excessive vibration from the alternator. Not only that, it helps pull the alternator back into a more true alignment for the belt pullies.
I made a short cell phone video on YouTube. Sorry for the music in the background! I did not realize it was so loud.

I commend you on your rod forming abilities. Nice fix - looks like it did the trick. _________________ 82 Vanagon Westy - AAZ 1.9 TD, HE200 Holset, WAIC, 27.75 dia tires, Electric power steering, 5-speed AAP w/.078 5th

Good idea, maybe you could make properly shaped rods for others at a price. |

Maybe. I have an automatic transmission. Unsure if the bellhousing on the standard trasnmission is different. |

Nice work - I might try and do the same for my 1.9.
I bought the original Gowesty stainless bracket which is still ok but I see they have changed the material because they crack. I also bought their monster bracket but it doesn't fit the 1.9. _________________ 1962 Karmann Ghia
