Did lowback seats ever make their way into a 68 bug from the factory? I have a 68 with lowbacks in an otherwise stock low mileage bug. Most of the interior seems original also.

A lot of people swapped them out, both when they were new, and later. Outside of the U.S. the headrests were optional, all cars came with lowbacks. But in the U.S., no, the 68's had the highback seats.

Thank you. Original owner didn't seem like a modifier and the car had been sitting in her garage for the past 15 years. That's why I asked.

Low backs came standard in many European cars in later years but most likely they were swapped at sometime. I have '66 low backs in my '69.

Euro model 68's had low back seats. Your car could be an import from someone who purchased in Europe and had it shipped over e.g. servicemen stationed there.

My imported RHD '68 here in Oz have the low back seats.

Thanks for the info. I believe the car was originally bought at VW of Santa Monica in California. Still has the dealer plate frames attached front and rear. I also believe the car is an early 68 because the trunk release is under the dash near my left knee.
