Bentley seems to be silent on this, what is the preferred method? I am guessing cold so the oil has drained down. I guess technically it is not hot or cold since the transmission doesn’t generate heat like the engine, but do I need to let it sit for a specified length of time after driving it before I check the level? _________________ 1970 Crew Cab |

For a manual tranny it doesn't matter, the oil will drain down sufficiently within seconds to get an accurate reading. |

Generally you let st least let it sit long enough for any air bubbles to get out of the oil then put a pan under the trans and remove the side filler plug/ Let any excess drain out and put the plug back in. If no gear oil drains out use your pinky finger (so you don't get it caught) and just barely touch inside the fill hole. There should be gear oil on the tip of your finger. If not then add oil until it flows out, let it sit 5 minutes until it stops then put the plug back in. It really doesn't matter whether the trans is warm or cold. If it takes much oil to top it off better find out why. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Get it warm and change it. New oil will make your trany and you happy as it will last longer. I change mine every 10,000 miles. |

That is what my dad would have called a recreational oil change.
Being as I have put 8000 miles on my Bay in a month and many other times 8000-12000 in three months, doing so would be absurd. |

Hahaha I love that term.
I would probably do it every three years if I didn't hit the VW service interval of 30,000 miles so often. If a car isn't driven much, then I would do it just to get the moisture and build-up out.
