I just purchased a 73 Thing with a gas heater. I noticed a short metal cable attached to the vent control lever on the dash near the glove box. it is not connected to anything but the lever. I think it goes to the air vents, but I think I may be missing these pieces. Can someone post pictures on these vents, how they mount on the thing and where this cable attaches

Thanks for the picture, but I am still confused where the vent doors are located and where the cable connects to the doors
Do you have a picture from the vehicle?

The cable comes from the lever and goes down to the Vent number 15 in the picture and goes up inside it to a little lever. This closes off the heat from the floor and directs it to the windshield. It is very simple if you have all the parts. You have to have part 15 for it to work.

This is all I've got; need somebody who owns a '73 to snap a photo.

I just looked at mine again and the picture shown would look just like that. There is nothing but the cable going from the lever to the outlet. Would have to remove the outlet to show the hookup inside.

I just looked at mine and there is a flapper door which either directs heat to the floor or up to the windshield. The cable from the dash lever reaches that are but there is nothing on the flapper door to connect the cable. Where do I find that connection ? When I look up in that vent I can see and work the flapper but see no way to connect the cable. Sorry for all the questions but you have been very helpful. I also found a hornets nest in the vent!

OK this is simple, the cable goes through the side of the outlet were the flapper door is, look at the flapper and there is a little lever attached to the door with a hole in it. The cable has a Dog Leg bend in it at the end. If I remember when I installed mine you take the tube off and to get the bent wire attached. Reinstall it and then you put the little clamp on the cable on the out side of the tube and adjust it to full close and open. Tighten the clamp and check it to make sure it works. Hope this makes since.

This is a picture of the vent opening in the footwell. A rubber flapper door covers this vent. Am I missing a part because I still don’t understand how to connect the vent lever cable. Be patient with me , I am a surgeon not a mechanic!

Yes you are missing part 15 in the parts break down and the same part in the picture that shows the cable. When you have that part it will all make since. Check with Mike at https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2153489 and he should have the part.
When I was working as a Tech for Mercedes, BMW, Porche, VW, Audi I use to tell the Doc's they had it easy, Went to school on the Human Body and the Brain was there, the Heart was there, The lungs there, etc. When a new car came out they would move Control units the junction boxes the sensors. Change the way the engine was controlled, had to learn a new system every year and remrber the way the old ones worked as well. Enjoyed it and still do.

The cable connects to a flap in 23. If you close the flap on 23, it diverts the Dow to 22. Part 15 is the fresh air intake manifold to bring air into the combustion chamber. No heated air passes thru 15.

Apologies Billy, but I think it is number 21 in the parts breakdown that connects to the cable.

Correct on the 21 should have gotten the parts book out and not looked at the small picture on the computer.

Looking at the parts diagram is the air always blowing towards the defrost and the flap allows air to go to the lower passenger compartment when opened?

Whenever the heater is on, air is blowing out. Where most of it goes depends on which way the little handle moves the flap inside the nozzle in the picture. You can put the handle anywhere between all footwell heat/less defrost and all defrost/no footwell heat. The problem with the footwell heat is that it cooks your right foot Very Happy

I just went through a similar dilemma. There is supposed to be a tab on the flapper that the cable hooks into after it passes through the warm air elbow, but the tab had broken off. It didn’t look like it was very robust to begin with...

Note that the Thing Shop sells a warm air elbow for a 73 but not sure if that’s what you need since there isn’t a picture on their site for some reason. My cable was also in very bad shape.

I replaced the tab on the flapper by cutting a small piece of aluminum angle (I used a “T” profile but an angle would work, and riveting it onto the flapper in the place where the tab should be. I had to drill a small hole in the new tab for the end of the cable to hook into.

I couldn’t find a good stock cable, so I had a replacement cable made by a control cable specialist- I think it was about $20 although he couldn’t match the little bracket that holds the cable to the warm air elbow so I used a cable clip instead. Took a little trial and error but it works great now!

If you decide to try this solution I can try to take a picture although I’m not sure how much is visible without taking it apart. I also have some of the aluminum T left and would be glad to make you a new tab that you could rivet to the flapper.
