Bought my 66 back in 2012 as my first ever car project and have been stalking here ever since.
Initially just wanted to get the thing running and driving but, as I'm sure you know, one thing led to another...
Now, with the engine on my workbench, I've come to realize my crankshaft has excessive end-play that I measured as .042" or about a millimeter.
The wear limit is documented at .006".
Reading that I might have a 'spun' main bearing, I decided to pull the flywheel to see what I could see.
(The torque-meister tool worked pretty well). Found a metal gasket over the four pins on the end of the crank.
The main oil seal is weeping some and there is some solidified oil splattered around, but not really terrible.
Pried out the oil seal with a bicycle tire iron, and beneath that found only two shims each measuring .013".
I understand there are supposed to be three shims, but even the thickest won't bring me into spec.
So now, as I look at this end of my crankshaft, what can I learn? What am I looking at?
That must be the side of the main bearing that was under the shims.
I can move the crankshaft forward/backword and see that both outer and inner bearing surfaces move a little.
I can grab the outer edge of the bearing and twist it right/left maybe 1/16".
Is the bearing spun? Can I tell anything at this point?
Seems I will need to split the case and possibly have it align bored, but I first wanted to get some insight regarding how to proceed from the knowledge base here.
This is all a new adventure for me, and I'd appreciate any helpful advice before I really screw things up.
Never thought I would be this far into the car before having driven it.
Thanks,
Brad

Yep, if you can move that bearing in the case, it’s toast. It should be held in place with interference between the case halves and there is a dowel that also keeps it from rotating. Any movement warrants a rebuild. |

... and possible machining of the case bearing face, and shimming. |

Most people call it “endplay”.
“Foreplay” should be left for your wife or significant other!

Just split the case and see what you get... |
