Although this summer's Itinerary has been deluged with daily rain for the past five weeks, NaranjaWesty, the 1977 Westfalia brought out of a twenty year storage sleep, has been a flawless performer throughout.
Here's its original introduction to the forum at 41,836 miles:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7832471&highlight=#7832471
The odometer was at 72,000 miles when I took off for Miami in mid-February of this year. In the past 16,000 miles over the past six months, we have seen only a loose condensor screw, a failed brand-new Bowden Tube, and a grenaded pilot bearing replaced by none other than SG Kent in Sacramento. None of these failures caused the car to stop or delay me.
CHTs have averaged 410* with a peak of 441* due to an analomous over-timing event outside of Phoenix. Fuel economy has been all over the map with 12 mpg in the mountains, and 22 mpg with a tailwind.
Valve adjustments have lost maybe a quarter turn to "recession" or seat wear.
Haven't touched the plugs. Adjusted the points once.
This bone stock Westfalia has been such a remarkable pleasure to drive, truly the most-civilized, quiet Volkswagen I have ever driven. I sort of feel bad to just use up this original engineering in the pedestrian service of my livelihood. My '73 bus was a daily driver for most of its 30 years with me, and I took it all for granted. This car feels like an extension of that easy familiarity, but the storm clouds are amassing at the horizon ... what am I going to do when this utterly trustworthy original engineering has reached the end of its service life?
Colin

She is truly magnificent! It was a real pleasure riding in her too.

Indeed, why not?, not many get to experience what a tight, low(ish) mile/well maintained bus drives like, treat yourself because you can! _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I wasn't looking when you started the pilot bearing. Are the numbers in or out? I meant to ask at the time but figured you knew.

Oh my god, the insomnia since I read this . . .
Thank-you, we're at 88,800 now. It is ticking up like a California gas pump.

Yes. It is actually a better car now. I feel more justified in asking $29,999.00.
But you just can't replace the experience for any amount of money.

WTF is this squad car shit? It looks like a German postal vehicle, yes, but a squad car? Skills has been sniffing too much Subaru exhaust.
I think you should junk it now while you're ahead, though. Just sayin. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

hence the term "squad car" and another one is "cave and pave"....that is where you hammer down the high spots and pave over it with filler _________________

Y'all can't see the color mismatch when driving it, ya pups! I took the wheel somewhere around 58,000 miles two summers ago, and was a little bummed out that I couldn't hear the engine during my double-clutch downshift up 71whitewesty's hill in Hood River, Oregon.
The car is damn nice, but it DOES have some flaws. 29k? I mean, there is a click coming from the dash/instrument cluster every few miles. That should take it down to $28,995, right? I sure as hell know that if something were to happen to my bus and the insurance company were to make good on their agreement, I would take no other bus in the country currently for sale, and I've driven a lot of buses.
