After years of dreaming & research, I finally joined the club!
She is a 1979 California Westfalia. The original FI is intact! Original paint, interior and engine. The engine has 58k miles on it, and was rebuilt 5k miles ago. There is only surface rust on the bus, and a dent where the spare tire was on the front (which I really would like to fix). This bus passes smog and the engine other than a few drops of oil seems to be running great. I am missing a fan shroud, the back reflector lens is broken, it needs a foam engine seal (it is missing), and it needs some interior cleaning and some elbow grease, but overall the bus seems to be in great shape. I am probably going to take it in for a tune up and have the fuel lines replaced and do some overall maintenance before I drive anywhere with her. It will take me a while to figure out her name, but I am excited to get to know her character. If you can recommend anything else I should do, that would be wonderful!
Brand new Poptop waiting to be installed!

Nice looking ride, bonus points for originality!
Engine porn, please. I’m curious about your comment that you’re missing a fan shroud. |

I don't think so - Tram meant every word - Let's wait until Gary looks over the smog gear to be sure it is all there.
Welcome to the new guy - who wants to work him over first? (Just kidding - he'll get plenty as he tries to absorb 40 years of learning into a few months.)
I guess someone should warn him to stay away from the oil strainer nut unless he has a torque wrench that goes as low as 9 ft lbs so the engine doesn't get trashed.
I'm just jealous y'all are in San Diego and I am stuck in smoky Sacramento. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

I guess I will post it since I see it everywhere!
More pictures (engine) coming soon! We should do a San Diego meet up! It seems like we have enough people in Encinitas alone to make a decent size one. Maybe we should all go to the next Encinitas Vintage cars on the 101.
SGKent you should come down and get out of the smoke for a bit, the ocean is 75F right now! |

Nice pictures and nice bus. I love it. Mine is also a Cali-model, but I swapped the components to '77 Federal since I'm not subject to smog.
That's not a fan shroud you are missing, that's just the cover for the fan. The shroud is the large grey piece that surrounds the fan and takes up the largest portion of the motor that is visible at the rear. It is the weathered, grey and white piece showing.
How much was the bus? _________________ 1979 Mexico Beige Westy auto
