Pulled this little guy out of the transmission yesterday.
Not a good sign. I really want to rebuild my own, however I still need to gather the right tools and since I take care of a 6 month old for half of my day now time is not on my side. So I'm looking for a good off-the-shelf unit that I can plug in that's strong enough to sit behind an RJE 2.3 engine. I'm looking hard at German Transaxle and Rancho at the moment. It seems Bus Depot sells the Rancho units for $100 less than Rancho? I wonder why that is the case.
Bummed about having to replace my transmission but it's also the last weak link in this van, so it will be nice to know I'm no longer sitting on a time bomb. Any advice, new developments on transmissions or other info I should consider is appreciated. Thanks all.

Thats not the end of the world. Shifter bearing/bushing. Mine had lost one and was shifting fine and Ive heard of others like this too. Replace em n reassemble unless you have other symptoms? _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1988 Toyota Supra 5 speed targa, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

A six month old is the ideal wrenching companion. Wait until they move from where you put them, and then start walking....then your time will get precious.
Just wear double nitrile gloves so you can quickly have clean hands for kid attention. Or try Moly grease for rash..... _________________ .ssS! |

It's amazing the entire sleeve has worked its way out intact. Are the two little balls still in the sleeve? _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

The warranty could explain the difference in cost. I haven't called BD but I'd probably need to get a hold of Ron for the details.
When my son starts crawling and walking it will be all over! I'd love it if we spent time in the shop... hopefully time with dad will win out over TV and video games.
Interesting that the trans can loose one of these and still shift fine. No problems as of now. I'm concerned that this is the beginning of the end though. How long can I drive with this part missing?
The bushing has 2 balls on one side and 1 ball on the other side. I fished around with a magnet after finding the bushing, but haven't picked up any other pieces.

...or maybe BD has some older stock on the shelf, while Rancho's prices have since bumped up...???
