Is there a timeline of changes somewhere that I can look over as I’m working on it to see where this falls? Any chance this is a weird mid-year bastard?

And is it worth the hassle to get the title corrected (*please say no, please say no* Laughing )

The original title (aside from using the motor number instead of the chassis number) was a little weird. It had “date first sold” as 00/00/63 and “year” as ‘64. That’s where they got the ‘64 from.

And, based on the original license plates on her, they didn’t leave her in Germany very long. They are stamped ‘63 so she was in the US before ‘64.

I wouldn't worry about it if it was my bus, as long as the title matches the vin etc.

Any bus enthusiast will know that it's a 1963. Seeing that it was built in July makes it a late 63, but still a 1963 model. Imo a 63' is much cooler with the small rear hatch than a 64' and up.

My 57 was titled as a 58 when I bought my bus. I went to the DMV and they couldn't verify it because their records didn't go back that far. I brought the VIN info from here on the Samba as backup but they didn't budge. The guy was a miserable jerk too. He gave me a form and told me to go to the CA Highway Patrol office and have them do a VIN verification. I made an appointment with the Highway Patrol and brought all the evidence and they agreed, signed my form and sent me back to the DMV. A few months later I received my corrected title. Fairly simple but time consuming.

It bugged me so I had to do it! Good luck!!

I've done the same thing as well in CA. VIN verify by CHP and then your all good.

Can the latch for the cargo doors be repaired or is this a “replace only” kind of part? The lower “arm” on mine doesn’t move when the handle is turned so I’m assuming something is either loose or broken inside the mechanism.

It looks like the whole thing is riveted together except that on one side the rivets looked pointed like they might be a screw. I tried grabbing and turning them but had no luck. If they’re screws I’ll figure out a way to slot and unscrew them.

Otherwise it’s off to the classifieds.

Oh - and should the interior handles on this model have the chrome escutcheon or was that a deluxe bit?

Look in the "FAQ" at top of the forum, for "cargo door latch"

Dang it! One of these days I’ll be more self sufficient... probably. Lol

Took a quick read and revisited my latch. What I thought might be poorly installed screws was in fact poorly installed welds. This has been open and mucked with before.

I’ll try cracking this one open to see if I can make a more permananet repair.

Oh - and another really dumb question. Is the small lever on this supposed to lock the door? Mine has really odd behavior that is ikeky due to assembly problems or worn out parts.

Not a stock part for 1963 and earlier if my memory serves correctly.

From the 1965 owners manual:

Earlier Westies used a cotter pin slipped into a drilled hole in the latch tab.

Better to drill and tap those rivet spots for screws. That way one can take it apart later for lubrication or a little more work.

Yes, the small plastic knob on the inside prevents the handle from being turned.

Thank you and curse you all at the same time for the Magic Eraser tip... Now I want to hit every painted part in the interior and make it pretty again. And I couldn't just stop with the eraser. Nope. Hit it with polishing compound and wax, just for good measure.

Oh - and you didn't warn me that one magic eraser is good for about 18 inches of dash before it crumbles to nothing. Fortunately, Amazon has 20 packs of generic erasers (melamine sponges, in case anyone needs to get a bunch) for $8.99.

I recall seeing that but it never occurred to me that it mine had been replaced with an incorrect version. I need to reset my expectations on how this was maintained / repaired in the past.

I'll see if I can find pics of the attachment and the pin (and see if I can find a correct replacement for the latch).

Apparently not this one. lol It may have to do with not having the lock on the outer handle. If I get it apart I'll see if I can make it function again.

For sure. No welder in the garage (yet), but I do have drills and taps. I saw that this has been done in the past, along with the socket head cap screw repair of the guts. Seems like something I can do.

Of course I see this when I'm at work. Can't wait to get home and see if I have this on my '59 SO23.

I think this is the factory mechanism. I found a random shot of the outside handle and I'd forgotten that it has a key lock in it. Also, from another thread:

This is a photo of my 63 panel bus, it has the inner handle on it already. Iam thinking it is OG to the bus because all of the locks on the bus work with one key.

Lots more interesting info in those owners manuals. Later 1966 or 1967 describes how and when VW advised locking the flap in the air cleaner open. Pointed that out recently and a long time member here on TS was a bit surprised about that.
