After keeping my eyes peeled for a Double Cab for years... my search is over... woot... woot.
I received an 'alert' in my email inbox... I guess I had created one for Double Cab or something. I read the text & it seemed great.... clicked on it... "this ad has been deactivated." I figured I'd give the guy a call anyway. I ended up having an appointment to go see it. Me & the Mrs. made the four hour drive & picked up a U-Haul trailer on the way.
The guy I had been talking to about it was the seller's nephew... just helping with the sale. He said I'd meet Ted, to see the bus at his mountain cabin. I told him I'd be bringing cash. Ted is 80 & saying he's a little cautious wouldn't do him justice. Ted is a German guy, studied in Germany as a VW/Porsche mechanic and earned a living as such in the 60's and 70's. He also autocross / gymkhana raced.... super cool guy (once you pass muster & get to know him).
I had to meet Ted at a bank, per his request, so a teller could check all my cash for counterfeit bills. We get up to his neck of the woods... meet in a bank parking lot to introduce ourselves... make small talk/talk VWs for a bit... go check my bills. Whew... I made it out of the bank with no counterfeit bills. On to the cabin.
The garage door opens & the dust on the DC is thick... loving it.
The engine is apart and in the bed... but the rest is all there except the hoops and pedal/splash pan. It was exciting to see such a nice original bus, and available.
I saw a couple small manila envelopes with trim washers inside & "Seemore" was written on them. I inquired about the text & he said it was a relatives four year old son that inspired the name of the bus. They had taken the little guy for a ride... delegated him to the back seat. Sometime along the ride they let him climb up front, stand on the floor and hang on to the dash grab handle. With his face up to the windshield, he exclaimed "I can see more!"
We had sandwiches and started negotiations. He had lots of interest in the bus... even though the ad was only up for 8 minutes.
So, let's get on with some pics...
Deal is struck... we move it outside...
North american equipment & tilt/bows
Got it home safely... long day...
Cab mat is nice...
Electrics seem not too molested...
Mmmm... I'm liking the floor...
Gotta get that mat out... loving it so far.
My plans for it are mechanical stuff to get it on the road ASAP.
Eventually weatherstripping & don't know about anything else past that.
Going stock height... 1600 SP 34 PICT-3 with big nut trans... dual circuit master... staying 6v.
I have a nice restored generator on the way from Rick Clark. German SVDA from Heimlich on the shelf... and the carb is on the shelf too... from Tim at Volkzbitz.
More to follow as I continue to clean it up and get it ready to go to a local VW shop... http://www.westy-werks.com/
Thanks for tuning in and your support.

I saw this ad pop up on this site.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2203580
I knew it was a good deal and even posted it in the Good Deals thread. I saw the ad went down really quick after it was posted.
Congratulations, it looks like a great bus and the price was excellent considering how solid this one is. Did you have to pay him over his asking price? _________________ September 1964 Standard Sunroof walk through SWR/BG original paint. |

I don't know where I was in the list of repliers. I was the first to show up, but... I had to be checked out first. Ted was uneasy about somebody coming up to his place. They wanted to do some sort of background check on me before letting me come up to see it.... not kidding.

Front floors and headliner pieces stood out to me as super nice.
Did it come with a rear bumper too or did that get lost along the way? |
Headliner is clean... a little droopy in the back, but not too bad. Bumper was up in the rafters!

Yep, that ad price went away about as fast as the ad did. There was appartenly lots of interest & guys throwing numbers at them. Price went into the 20's.
OK... more pics.

Thanks Dave, Thomas & 69aircooled!
The ad said it was one owner... but it turns out it wasn't.
Ted told me a construction company bought it new... and sold it to them when it was six months old. I think I can handle my case of third owner blues.
It has been resprayed... but Ted never remembers it being painted. I'm wondering if there's some construction company logos under there. The respray is flaky here & there... I bet it will come off easy. I'l probably end up doing some paint stripping when I get closer to replacing some tired/cracked/leaky rubber.
New tires arrive tomorrow. I took andre b's suggestion to get some Achilles LTR-80 195-15
