No kidding!
I dont’t feel like pulling the trans & driving it 4 hours to Riverside.
Can the one axle half be taken out at the side cover, without making a bunch more work/mess up some geometry? Seems like it’s just removing some side cover nuts & the big circlip?... but, I’m not really sure. I could ship them a axle half much easier than dealing with the whole trans.
Or...
Should I just fix it myself? _________________ aka: Evan

The engine builder called & said it’d be done in a couple weeks.
I figured I’d better get busy tying up loose ends.
Today seemed like a good day to install e-brake cables.
I put oil in the RGBs & gave the stub axles a spin.
One was bent... grrr!

Damn. Is it a 3/4- or 1-ton RGB setup? Hope it’s not the one-off 1-ton for ‘63s...in any case, you’re making progress, even if it’s a temporary step back. Keep at it, Evan! _________________ ,,Wenige Menschen denken, und doch wollen alle entscheiden.'' -der Alte Fritz

It’s a proper big nut.
My only hang up about fixing it myself is I’ll probably void the 5-yr warranty and I don’t have a welder to affix a nut to the freeze plug. Maybe I could braze it & it’d hold? _________________ aka: Evan

The guy who built it sent it out with a bent stub? _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Affirmative. I doubt they run into bent ones very often... as BarryL alluded to. They said “bring it in & we’ll fix it.”
If I lived in Riverside... I’d be all over it.
But I don’t... so, trying to figure out what the next step is that makes the most sense. _________________ aka: Evan

As much as it sucks, I would send it back and have the builder fix it. If you make the repairs, any problem that you may have with it after even if it is not related to the original issue, the builder may not honor the warranty. 🤷🏽♂️ |

You can send them the one whole side without upper axle. It's relatively easy to disassemble but still a pain. I've even done it in situ but easier out. It's not filled with gear oil yet? |

Their screw up they should cover the shipping. It's bad enough you Have to waste your time pulling it and crating it. I get sick of companies putting out shoddy ass work and inconveniencing the customer. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Finally got around to taking the trans out.
Putting it in solo was tough. I decided to make a cradle, to see if it would make moving it easier & less dangerous.
It made pulling it out a piece of cake.
The 2x4 skids make it high enough to get a floor jack in/out from underneath it.
2” hole saw (1-3/4” would be better)
(1) 21” long 2x4... hole cut at midpoint... then cut in half (axle tube supports)
(1) 40” long 2x6
(2) 2x4 skids ~14” long
(2) 8” long 2x3 to support trans case (and fit between frame horns). You can see the two under the case... I made them too long by accident & the had to take a fuzz off to be effectively 8” long.
(1) piece of plastic patio decking, to support the nose
Bailing wire... to tie the tubes to 2x6 plank.
Engine is almost done.
I’ll pick up the engine & get stub axle swapped... all in the same trip. So, at least the inconvenience is going to occur when I’m in the same neighborhood as the engine pick up.
He installed a stock exhaust & forgot to install a Vintage Speed one I sent down. He’s correcting it & will re-dyno.
It should make the hp/torque a tiny fuzz better.
I’m curious to see how much difference the dyno numbers change with the VS exhaust.

hey nice truck! I saw your 74x85.5 motor and it brought back memories of my old single port stroker. it had a Norris mileage maker cam and it had dual 34 weber icts with SVDA dizzy. one of best motor i ever had and it did 26mpg one trip on a loaded bus. Built by the late Bud Whitfield. You will love this combo.

Are you going to pull the brake hardware off when it goes off for repair?
I found it virtually impossible to refit the trans with the brake drum etc in place. I was trying to save some time and had a cradle like that to move it around with the brakes in place but the weight of the drums made it too cumbersome to refit, especially as both the drum and tube/RGB are free to rotate. I couldn't bolt the RGB to the spring plate without stripping the brakes off. _________________ Andy

I'm not doing extra work to ease their task. I'm already annoyed at dealing with defective rebuild.
Axle tubes don't rotate on my cradle, but I know how much of a pain it is whey they are movin' up, down & all around.
I used a large C-clamp over the drum... to the spring plate... to make them nice & tight against each other.
This relieved the potential of creating issues relating to RGB housing threads when loosening/tightening bolts. _________________ aka: Evan

Vintage Speed exhaust on the 1700cc SP yielded +2 hp & +5 TQ over stock exhaust.
Now 67 hp & 100 TQ (at the flywheel).
So that’s ~$240/hp for those two extra ponies... and probably no need for future muffler replacements.
Also, shines light on the old adage... there's no replacement for displacement.
