Do not use a sand blaster or anything abrasive. A mild cleaner and a stiff brush will do the job. Remember that the case is magnesium and will darken over time.

Castrol super clean and a brass bristled brush. Use a screwdriver and picks to get the chunks out of the deep recesses. Spray on the SC. Give it a good scrub with the brush. Wet it again and let it sit for 20 minutes and pressure wash it. On the inside you can skip the scrubbing and just let it sit.

You might have to repeat the process a couple times. I find it works best if you let it mostly dry between applications of Super Clean.
