Congratulations on what I think was a good buy! What year is this van? I ask because the heater tunnel between the front seats leading to the rear is not like the ones I have seen before. Nor is the lower dash section it mates to. Could you or perhaps another knowledgeable member chime in on that detail? The floor tunnel I have and center dash cover are much different.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with it. I've located a donor side panel to deal with the large vent holes from the original Get Away conversion (that the PO butchered)

Well some time has passed since I brought Jasper home.
Since then I rebuilt the inside kitchen unit,
repaired the body work on the drivers side and zoomed down the coast to Crescent city and back
plus numerous weekend getaways.
Can’t be happier with the van.
So much so that I had a shop built.
Today was a landmark day.
I am done with laying on my back in a gravel driveway.
Good times ahead indeed. _________________ 9 1/2 - missing a few pieces.

If a guy were to live in a van in a garage, would he still be living in a van?

Ha ha now you guys sound like my buddies that ALL questioned why I'd spend money on a hoist. Suddenly they all want their vehicles here "to take a look at something .........."

Yeah I'm pretty happy haven't had time ($$$) to finish the interior yet. That's going to have to wait. I want to get working on the high top for next year. Motor and tranny build is on the books.

For sure tats are intensely personal. I have 4 and each one is a memory of a time or a reminder to be a better person. Could i have the memories and behavior correction with out the tats? I suppose that question is like asking the fitness buff if they'd be fit with out the gym membership or the religious person if they'd be a good person with out the religion or if the van owner would be a social and happy person with out the van?
And after looking at the underside of my van ....... I'm not convinced that I shouldn't be spending my money on something better ......
D/S front wheel is definitely not spinning freely, I'm thinking caliper is toast.
Shift rod has some dubious movement and darn it if my brand new-in-May CV boot isn't ripped in half .........
At least I won't be laying on my back contemplating life's big questions.
Good times ahead. _________________ 9 1/2 - missing a few pieces.

No tats here either, and only one Vanagon. But I’ve been actively looking at a cheap, yet solid Vanagon tin top to have as an airport car for SFO. |

If I was removing the oil cooler on a new-to-me rig, I'd definitely replace those hard to get at coolant hoses connecting to it at the same time.

FWIW, those hoses failing led to me being towed home a couple years ago, so I might be paranoid. |
NOT paranoid as it turns out…..
So it’s been a while since I updated this thread.
Life got complicated, like it did for all of us but through it all Jasper soldiered on providing some respite from the chaos.
Many get away trips to local hideouts were great but eventually mikemtnbike predicted the hose failure. Thankfully I had preemptively bought an entire hose kit from Bus Depot so was well prepared.
I have commenced buying engine and cooling parts for this winters rebuild.
The UPS stork today delivered a new rad and stainless coolant pipes.
Next month I’m pulling the trigger on a new 2.2 from Concept 1
Stay tuned.
Additionally I purchased a third van, and 85 westfalia project missing the pop top.
No new tats yet…… _________________ 9 1/2 - missing a few pieces.

Put some new boots on the van today.
Went with the BFG KO2’s.
Definitely notice the extra inch (radially) on the power. Had to use third gear on hills I’d previously run up in high gear. No complaints though as I actually prefer the lower RPMs all around.
Weirdly enough the speedo now reads correctly, which makes no sense but according to my gps it’s within a few k’s of the indicated speed.
Ordered the rest of the coolant pipes yesterday. I now have just about everything new for the cooling system. Hopefully ordering my new motor next month.
Good times ahead. _________________ 9 1/2 - missing a few pieces.

Love my BFGs.
The stock speedo reads high so when you oversize tires a bit it brings it close to real speed. |
Ah good to know, thanks.
Definitely going to look at a Passat gage cluster swap. I'd like to be able to track mileage and currently the odometer doesn't work. _________________ 9 1/2 - missing a few pieces.

Plenty of threads on fixing the stocker. I've done it myself and mine is still ticking over thousands of miles later. As far as Vanagon repairs go, once you remove the cluster from the vehicle it's a job you can do inside while sitting down and it's clean. You should consider it. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

Yeah you're probably right. My cluster is in great shape and it would be nice to keep it original.
Only people that work on vintage vehicles would note if a job was "clean" or not.

Not only out of the sun but snow too.
I'm considering putting these new boots to work and driving it a bit this winter. I'm leery about salt damage and potential for fender benders though. Maybe its me but every year the local driving skills seem to fall off considerably when the snow hits the ground.

I meant on an absolute scale; automotive work, bicycles, you name it. The job is cleaner, and the parts lighter, than you'll find just about anywhere. It's almost enjoyable simply for that reason. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |
