BigBore - I typed bear hairs - spell check got it. Robbie knows better to leave the cubs alone. They are next season's belts up north.

Wyoming? Robbie, please repeat after me, "north in spring and south in fall... Some one please show Robbie how to read a map or input GPS. "

Five states in the last 48 hours, and heading to Brooklyn tonight through a lightening storm. We’ve got a family wedding, a mad dash to DC, back to Grand Rapids, a special surprise, Route 66 to traverse, and several important plans to cancel. Stay tuned for the next chapter of “Robbie’s laundry won’t dry in this damn humidity.”

Wait Route 66? But that’s not an interstate highway! That might be dangerous! Don’t do it Robbie! All that separates you from a head on is yellow paint on the road! So sketchy!! NOOOOOOOOO!!!

Generators went out with listening to Harry Nilsson. Time to get an alternator, you know you want to. Cool

If you make that stop in Albany, Ive got a spare 38A or two you should travel with, just in case. Might have OG cast pulleys, too.

Here's a serious question-

How long should a brand new set of say NOS Bosch brushes last before needing to be replaced if the armature and everything else was good in the generator?

geez - I'd get 60,000 - 80,000 on a set of generator brushes. What's up with this? Get with Telford and see what he recommends to clean the armature. They used to make a special eraser one could use to clean it when replacing brushes,

I use a strip of 400 grit wet-or-dry, and a flat stick to hold the sandpaper against the commutator. Spin the armature and sand just enough to make everything bright and shiny. Then use a pointed non-metallic stick to clean all of the crud out from between the commutator segments (IMPORTANT!) If done properly, and the brushes are of good quality and fit well and don't hang in the brush holders, then they should last a long long time - at least half of the life of the engine, or better.

My first (NOS Bosch) brush set lasted about 50k. I installed the second set, and the upper brush went kaput in about 2,000 miles, even after cleaning the commutator. At that point I cleaned the comm again and installed a used brush set well past the wear point to get me to the next town, and that set lasted me 12,942 miles. I honestly kept forgetting to swap out the grotesquely used set, and they endured an entire cross-country lap just fine.

Remember I run a massive stereo, interior & engne lighting systems, a laptop charger, camera charger, phone charger, and a refrigerator all off my 38-amp generator and one battery. (Used Optima deep cycle from 2012 I got for free.)

One might say my generator is working at the limit of its duty cycle all the time. That’s probably true. But I like the noise and I like being able to push start after a long weekend of camping when my fridge voltage cutoff doesn’t work. Cool

From my “apartment” (parking garage) on the Upler East Side!

This is my thought and how I've done generator rebuilds. I'm also with Steve in thinking 60K plus would be at least the minimum you'd get out of a set. I just can't recall changing many brushes in generators over the past several decades. Then again, I'm not putting 100k on my VW's every 5 years either. Wink
