Cabriolet steering wheel swap

I want to change my steering wheel from this.

To this:

Swap a steering wheel from about 1984 onto a 1989 model. Will it fit?

Somewhere in '88/'89 VW started using a fine spline adaptor. The newer car probably has that but it can be removed. It is a wedge mated fit so you will need a puller to remove it, the splines on the column will still fit the old steering wheel but you will need to retrieve the spring & spacer from the older car also.
