Worked on a rail today. New purchase by customer. Hasn't run for 2 years. He got it running before he brought it here, but not charging. Had generator and voltage regulator and he bought an internally regulated alternator kit for me to install. Generic chinese.
Install went well - but noticed a small hole in the top of the old regulator though. Didnt thing anything of it. Wiring looked OK. Nothing particularly ugly. Cleaned up a couple connections though.
Fired it up. Everything was at it should have been - alt light went off as it should. Car ran fine.
He got the car home and drove it a little and the alt light came back on.
OK - maybe a bad alternator. BUT my concern is that if the voltage regulator failed, there may be something else going on. But its a rail...Just ignition and lights....Any clue what may possibly cause this? I will be having him bring the car back next week and go all through the wiring, but I can;t even imagine what could cause this. Thanks in advance.
P.S. I have done 15 or 20 alternator conversions previously.... _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

If there is 12 volts at D+ terminal wire (at alt) with wire disconnected, with "key on" through ALT light.....Probably Chinese quality...
Simply removing D+ wire at alt and grounding it, with key on, ALT lamp should light, charge indicator/initiation circuit is good...
Only issue could be poor ground at alternator, BUT bolted to engine, I doubt that.... Other question where is negative side of battery connected to engine/chassis whatever and if battery is grounded to chassis is there ground strap or solid mounts between engine and chassis...

Customer reported this morning that light is functioning normally now. Keeping my fingers crossed. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.
