|
|
Hi all, just replaced callipers/disks/pads on my RHD UK '72 crossover, both callipers are 55mm 73 onwards, offside (RH) is fine with disk centred in the calliper, has typical shoulder/non shoulder bolt arrangement. Nearside (LH) disk is off-centre by 2mm inboard, I can get the pads in but they bind. Both bolts on that nearside side are threaded all the way.
Any thoughts on the cause? Possibe that the steering knuckle has been replaced on one side but not the other?
Thanks |

Welcome,
Did you happen to do a side by side comparison with the old parts as well as compare the new parts to each other?
It wouldn't be the first time a supplier shipped one wrong part.
Are the gaps between the pistons the same on both calipers when fully retracted?, do both discs align with each other when sat face down on a flat surface beside each other? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Hi Busdaddy
Took it all apart again and measured rotor face to hub surface face, etc, which were all consistent (didn't check thickness of hub face but would be surprising if that was out), calliper spacing is all 55mm, all mounting holes old and new are 14mm. Pistons appear to be fully retracted.
This is how they look, callipers are flat against knuckle and torqued up, discs are flat on hub.
Thanks

Thanks Busdaddy, couldn't see any dimension of the disks or callipers that were out, but will take them off again at the weekend and have a close look. Thanks for the thread link, my current thoughts are to make a shim to sit under the calliper out of 1mm sheet steel if I don't find anything wrong with the replacement parts. |

just using a piece of paper and your ruler, to me it looks like the difference could be where the rotor sits - meaning one rotor may be deeper, or one hub may be farther out. I can't pick up any difference in machined measurements on the calipers but camera angles can make things look different. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Thanks for the advice, I have identified that all brake components have correct dimensions, but the hub face the disk sits on is about 1.5 further inboard relative to the knuckle. Guess this may be down to a spacer being incorrect or similar. For now I have temporary fix having made up some 1.5mm x 14mm hole washers that bring the calliper inboard inline with the disk rotor. |
