Everybody I talk to has a different opinion as to the horse power of my '65 Beetle. What's yours?
VIN #115883786
Engine #9629625
Single port
Carb: Solex 28 PICT
Is it 36, 40 or 42 HP? |

It was called the 40HP motor, of roughly 1200cc, a successor in most markets to the earlier 36HP, also nominally 1200cc.
These HP ratings are SAE ratings. The equivalent DIN ratings are:
40HP SAE = 34 HP DIN (original post corrected)
36 HP SAE = 30 HP DIN

Slight typo, the 40hp SAE would be 34hp DIN, not 24. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

One way to tell is take to a dyno day and run it. My 1600cc single port stock cam 30 pict carb 205M distributor stock exhaust puts 40 HP to the ground at 3000 rpm. Oh forgot it is an H5 engine. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

HP is subjective - VW introduced the re-worked 1200 engine in the fall of 1960 and rated it at 34bhp DIN and they never wavered on that spec, despite numerous improvements over the years up to when they stopped making the "D" block at the end of model year 1985 in Mexico.
Now, it was initially rated at 40HP SAE, that did jump a little to 41.5HP later on, (but that 34bhp DIN never changed) _________________ Andy T.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox. |

Yeah, the factory rating is nominal. Some of our tired old engines probably aren't up to making full power anymore. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

Speaking only for myself, full power's a hazy memory. |
