I'm totally stumped.
Fitted the driver side locking door handle and the bolt holes don't align and the pointy end of the handle touches the door. Looks like the door seal (which is a plain flat piece of rubber) is pushing the rear of the handle out.
These are proper NOS door handles I got hold of about 4 years ago.
Do these door handles have a rubber seal at the base?
Is it a flat profile?
Is it a problem with the shape of the handle?

I tried the handles without the seal and they seem to fit...
I've measure the seal, the position of the holes and the curve of the handle (there's about 4mm of clearance of the tip of the handle).

Passenger door fits fine.
Driver side door still has about 1 mm to go for the bolts to line up. Seems like the door may have an issue. _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia - Sold

Try the handle on passenger side. If it lines up you have your answer. |

The answer may be to just push. Meaning, push the handle inward with the palm of your hand (over the lock cyl portion of the handle) while trying to line up the screws in the jam. I had the same issue with mine, using a new seal, fresh paint etc. With a little brute force, but still being super careful, I managed to get it all to line up. _________________ WANTED: Henry Veale Santa Rosa plate frames

Is your car a fresh repaint? If so, you probably have a build up of primer, filler and paint on the exterior that is causing this... especially since you state the handle fits without the seal in place. The NOS handles won't be the problem. _________________ My Beetles :

Thanks guys.
Looks like it's what you are saying. The doors were a bit tired so needed a bit of massaging before paint.
Gonna try the "gentle" brute force _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia - Sold

I had the same issue on my 57 a few days ago with new paint and new seals. Just got a large C clamp and gently squeezed the back of the door handle into place and could then start the screws.
