I'm rebuilding a set of Weber IDF 44s. I noticed they leak at a port that looks to be blocked off by something that looks like JB weld...

When I cleaned them I noticed the "plug" seemed to be deteriorating

Can I apply JB weld to the plug or should I take it to a carb shop?

I would not use JB Weld around gas. I tried once and the gas ate away at the JB weld till it failed.

Pull the plugs, tap them and plug them with brass counter sunk plugs.

Yes to removing offending plugs as jpaull states, and tap threads and use good Locktite sealer and thread in brass plugs....

Those should have had lead plugs, you might be able to get them from Pierce Manifolds.

JB Weld will work. But it needs to be cleaned well first then once the JB Weld is applied it needs to cure fully before being subjected to fuel.

Best done when carb is off and no fuel present.

Sounds like right now is the time then...
I cleaned and rebuilt them both, haven't had time to install them. I'll try the JB weld and let cure for 3 to 4 days before I install and run fuel thru them

I cleaned perfectly and let it cure plenty and still watched the JB weld turn to crap. I'm only mentioning this to save you from a possible mess up later.

I plan on getting some JB weld tonight or tomorrow...I'm willing to give it a try, I really dont want to tear these carbs apart, dig out the lead plug, drill then tap and try to clean out all the metal from the drill

I think I just figured out why my uncle has a bunch of bullets without caseings in one of the drawers he uses for keeping nuts, bolts, washers and other miscilainious things in.
