is it normal that the escaping hot cooling air blows directly onto the mustache bar or is there supposed to be a deflector in place that I'm missing? When running, the cooling air blows over the cylinders and heads and then exits the rear of the engine right onto the mustache bar which I think assists with heating up the rear apron in the engine compartment. one might think it's the correct path because it could also assist in cooling the exhaust but the mustache bar stands in the way of that air reaching the muffler and doing that supposed job.[/list] |

Yes, that is how they came from factory. _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

On a Type 4 engine the waste cooling air also blows across the oil filter. Apparently VW did not view this as a problem. In the hottest weather of summer consider running a synthetic or straight weight oils as they can handle higher temps than a typical dino multigrade oil. |

Looks like you may be over thinking it a little. Don't. That's how it is. how it's always been. if your bus is running hot I would look elsewhere. the rear apron getting a little hot on an early bay is normal. Especially when running aftermarket or performance exhaust systems. much less with stock exhaust. Cool air comes in through the intake vents at the top and the warm air exits out the bottom. This is why a sealed compartment is essential.
