Aynbody know the correct color for headlight housings?

I am restoring a set of 50's headlights and want to paint the housings between the bulb and the outer glass the correct color for a 52,53. I have seen them painted gray, silver and black. Which is correct? My gut feeling is black for this vintage and gray for the 60's. But I want to be sure before painting them. If it is black...should it be gloss? flat? semi-gloss? satin? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Every early headlight bucket I have seen was painted a light semi gloss grey. I've never seen black or silver - were those colors specific to much earlier VWs?
