I found a few posts on the subject.... Best so far is https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4598181
But it does not answer my question. I was going to reply, but figured I should just start a fresh one.
The bentley mentions the PINS holding the levers in and that they have to be removed to remove the dash panel. But no word on HOW. Shall I just cut them? Are there replacements? You can kinda see in the picture that I have been working the end of the closest one to you, but just don't have the right tool to push 4 tabs and then push them all out. PITA.
Once out, I might even consider not replacing them. My MK1 vw levers are plastic and just slide in and out. fingers are crossed. _________________ My Toys: '75 Porsche 914, '92 Ski Nautique and now a 1972 VW Transporter Deluxe (punch list fixing) |

The white 4-tab pins are difficult at first, but get easier with experience. By #4 you’ll be a pro. Use a small socket (like 6mm +/- 1mm) to push the four tabs closed and push the white pin out at the same time.
Generally speaking, I don’t reinstall them on my own bus. The metal tabs exert enough pressure on the control knobs to function well unless your passenger is an ape who doesn’t understand basic directions.

Agree with Robbie....the pins really are not necessary and the leaf-type spring pressure holds the levers in well enough. On my 71 Tintop, two pins crumbled and I cut the other two out with wire cutters. I did purchase replacement pins ($2.40/pair) and levers from EIS: https://www.eisparts.com/product-search.html?Search=air+levers
but never installed the pins |

I use a socket, never a problem. I save them for mounting emblems since they are the same part. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

nothing I tried worked for me. Hell, I even had trouble cutting them off. But they are now off. I may have saved 2, but they are ugly.
Thanks for chiming in. _________________ My Toys: '75 Porsche 914, '92 Ski Nautique and now a 1972 VW Transporter Deluxe (punch list fixing) |
