I am looking into buying a VW Beetle that is a ground up restoration. The issue is that the chassis is a 1966 and the body is a 1962 ragtop. The seller says he can register it as a 62 but it now becomes a custom build with a state issued vin# vs if he resisters it as a 66 its a straight forward process. My question is will registering it as 62 and getting a state issued vin# hurt the value of the car? any thoughts?

Welcome to The Samba.

Because you car has a different body & chassis it has not been restored. It is a custom build. What the title says will have no effect on the value of a Bug with a body swap. I would title & register it the easiest way possible and drive it.

Thanks for your time and response

The entire car has been restored; I just need to finish putting it together. The pans and channels are brand new and the chassis was cleaned and powder coated. It has a brand new 2276 4w disc brakes lowered shorten beam drop spindles in rear etc... The seller has all the paperwork and inspection done on the bug to get it titled as a 62 with the state issued vin, and he would do the registering in his state how ever I would like. would this make a difference in how you would title it?

Without getting certain obstinate posters involved and the thread locked, understand that there seems to be variation in practice and/or law on whether the chassis backbone stamped number, or the riveted plate's number, determines the model year. Check with local authorities (anonymously) to find what works in your locale. If the two numbers do not match, you could have trouble. An ounce of prevention...

Bastards need love too!

Just do the transaction at the DMV. Let them decide after a VIN check.

... i'd go with as little intervention from the DMV as possible. I think, most folks are frightened by a state issued VIN - it's really not a big deal, but very well might discourage some buyers, down the road, when you try to sell...

Anyone who knows VWs, will always know the pan is a '66 by the fact that it has a ball joint front end with front disc brakes... i'd leave it titled as a 1966.

... 62 and '66 features are pretty much the same, except for a few little things and if you don't bring any attention to yourself, you'd be better off.

I once bought a 1950 bug on a 1972 pan, in 1977 and the state of NJ tried to make me update the '50 body to conform with all 1972 upgrades - higher bumpers, higher and larger directional signals - front and rear, have emergency flashers, have seat belts and other 1972 upgrades that would have ruined the look of the split body... was the reason, the guy sold me the car, besides just having an engine fire for $400.

... not sure how your state will react, in any condition. I know, Oklahoma will not care as we have no inspection, like Florida doesn't... if you leave it as a '66. you won't bring much attention to yourself - and that's a good thing, in my opinion.

What I finally did on the 1950/1972 deal was buy a 1950 title from another state and register it as a 1950 - that was the simplest thing to do and left the 1950 body alone. I did add a 1956 snow flake directional system and disconnected the semaphores.

Hope you're getting it for a good price - sounds like a nice car...

Agree with most...Its a mix of parts, so registered year is not that important IMHO. The chassis VIN is what is typically used here in PA and I use that.

It's not "fully restored" if they lost the chassis.
Tell them to go find the chassis and restore it!!

The title goes with the chassis number.
So.... as long as it has that chassis and "looks like a bug" then it's a 66 in the eyes of the DMV
In mOST places in the US, traditionally, although maybe local laws vary.

i would rather have a original VIN number than an assigned vin.
The police and auto insurance understand it a lot easier.

Not having a matching body and chassis numbers de-values it by about 800$ IMO, no matter how you title it.

Florida doesnít give a crap. If youíre buying it in state they wonít even look at it, theyíll just issue the title and youíre done. If it comes from out of state - LEO will come out stand next to the car while you read off the vin from the chassis. Iíve done it twice now and itís hiw it went down both times.

Sharp is correct. I tagged my 70 & 71 Ghias in Florida without a title.
When I moved to Georgia they didnít care either. I changed my License and my tag walking from one window to another. No one even looked at the car.

Scary, and an indication of how it varies from state to state (and maybe even office to office!). In my case (CA), it was off the road (registered non-op) for about 8 years, and I had to get a paper temp plate in order to drive it to the DMV, then have them check under the seat (and oddly, the engine number) before they accepted it. It helped that I had the original pink slip and even the window sticker, and the numbers matched. They knew the dash and trunk plates were riveted on and they did not trust those. They also knew to look for the super-sticky sticker on the door jamb, too, to see if it was there and not tampered with.

The early cars didn't have the VIN sticker on the door jamb. In my experience, they only care about the pan number stamped into the trans tunnel for the early cars.

I'm not sure when the stickers came on scene. I'm guessing after 1970.

Yes, they came about 1970. I only mention it to share how some DMV offices really know their stuff, even if others don't or are too busy to bother. This was a small town office and had a little more time (it was also 10 years ago and they have also gotten busy since). It also illustrate that in most California DMV offices, they use the stamped backbone chassis number in preference to any plate.

... this is a great point. I had a 1976 Mercedes 300D with the roof cut off by the PO - making it a permanent vert = my insurance company saw that it had an assigned VIN and charge me a higher rate because it was modified.
