I don't know yet. The owner was Tom Powell and he's dead now.

if that vacuum hose is attached to the box, he's made a vacuum actuated throttle switch with LED indication! that vacuum line is T'd off of the port that should have less than 1" at idle and increases when the throttle is opened. the purple line controls the purge valve on the charcoal canister.

Looks like one of the vacuum switch replacements for the throttle position switch that originally was part of the throttle body assembly.

Isn't that one of Vanistan's old vacuum actuated TPS?

That is the tencent / Rocky Jennings VSM vacuum switching module. I liked mine. It recently died. The electronics and case are not made for a HOT/COLD engine compartment environment. There was a lot of corrosion inside mine when I took it apart to inspect after it quit working.

Thanks dabaron,
Whatever that means is a big help buddy.

So the Led light comes on when I blip the throttle off idle. The wires hook into a harness connector near the AFM and there is a vacuum hose to a Tee near the intake. Any idea what this thing does?

Vanistan VSM. It was my product.

The design specs anticipated the temps that would be encountered in North America, cold being the more critical factor. A Vanagon engine compartment doesn't reach 160ºF, that's barely warm to electronics. It's normally under 135ºF where the VSM rides.

What it wasn't was potted, so it is susceptible to water and pollutants. Where it's mounted in the engine bay it's not exposed to much of either. You're the only one to ever mention any damage.

Is there a Warranty or support? I wouldn't mind trying to bring it back to life.

My stuff all comes with full warranty and support for one year. You bought yours over 9 years ago. I haven't even sold these in over 4 years.

I had one known failure of the 5V VR chip, that's easy to test with a VOM, or if the chip is very hot it's failed, soldering in a new one will probably fix it. Get the p/n off the chip. The other reported problems were almost all due to the vac tube loosening on the MAP sensor nipple, open the cover and check that. That's about all I can tell you. Like Dan says, it's often easy to see a failed component by just looking inside.

I suspect there are a few dumb asses pretending to be smart asses. A wise ass knows how to differentiate between the two.
