I'm taking the engine out of a Puma. I have the shroud and alt/fan and carbs off, the distributor and alternator stand are next. The oil cooler stands way up, and the reason I am taking all these things off is so I don't have to lift the car so much. That and they will all have to come off anyway as there is just a little bit (NOT) of remedial work to do.
I can't drain the oil now because the engine is sitting on a piece of ply on the little trolley I made for it, which covers the sump plug. After I get the block out from under the car it'll get drained.
If I take the cooler off will any oil spill out? It's at the top, most should be in the sump anyway. |

If the engine hasn't run in a week, then it might have drained, or it might not.
No way to know.
If it has an oil filter with an anti-drainback valve, then that would help prevent it draining. |

For Type I, just remove the oil sending unit - this will drain most of the oil in the cooler. YOu can collect the oil w/ small cup from sending unit port.
But there will still be some oil left in the cooler.
Hope this helps. |
