Here's an ancient "Mecca" oil filter, mounted on the driver's side air filter mount.
It's well over 30 years old. Now-a-days, they're called Canton Mecca, and they look a little different (the body is an aluminum extrusion, rather than a casting), but they use the same filter elements as always (probably the same as the spin on filter under Glenn's fender).
There's lots of extra, unrecognizable stuff in the picture, but the filter inlet is at the bottom. The filter outlet, barely visible in this picture, is connected to an oil thermostat attached to the "firewall" with bulkhead fittings. The hose with the "T" fitting is the return hose to the engine.
Here's a sketch of the overall layout:
Just for another idea. here’s the installation I did in a ’71 Super Beetle in 2006.
The Beetle engine compartment is far less roomy than a Thing’s, and this was a very compact installation.
This is the later style Canton Mecca cartridge filter (the shorter model).
It was mounted directly on the engine, using only hard lines (no hoses at all).
In this installation, a low crack pressure check valve (Moroso 23875) was mounted at the filter inlet as an anti-drain-back device.
Both of these arrangements stay nice and clean, and are very easy to service.
Good luck, Mondshine |

I am avoiding the fender well. I blew out the rear drivers side tire on the highway before and the tire wrapped around the drum and it tore off the oil filter and lines. Needless to say being stuck in the fast lane on the small shoulder of the freeway with a blown tire and an oil down with no hose to repair is not fun or safe. |

Just mount it in the left rear fender well. _________________ Glenn

I was looking for photos and ideas for full flow filter bracket mounting areas on a Thing. Currently mine is off the bumper bracket since it is a straight shot to the case, but I may have to move it and was looking for suggestions. |
