The Bentley method requires a gas sniffer, which I don't have. This is for an 83.5, 1.9L 4-speed that failed CA SMOG with high NOX. Just going down the checklist.

The single-wire O2 sensor is relative to the ground of the exhaust bung it is mounted in. An analog multimeter is easiest to visualise the transition between low and high output of the sensor. Chasing the exact stoichiometric point with the O2 sensor is not likely to be successful. A proper exhaust gas sniffer or a Wideband O2 sensor is much easier to use for specific Air Fuel ratio measurement.

Some mechanics have the sniffer and could help you or do it for you. It can be a quick procedure if you're ready to go and know the steps you want to follow.
