I just bought a 1978 westfalia with the automatic transmission. The main wiring harness has been butchered both ends. Can someone with a like vehicle tell me or even better, send or post pics of where the harness routes around the back axle/ starter area, and in the front, where do the 2 wires for the auto trans selector leave the main harness and how are the routed to meet up under the selector? |

If you live in the San Diego area you are more than welcome to come take a look at my 79. If not I can maybe provide some pictures when I get home today. _________________ 1979 Sage Green California Westy. |

Have you searched the Samba gallery for pictures of engine bays? Lot of people seem to take pictures of their engine bay while the engine is out which might show you what you want to see. |

I did look for a long time to find pics. It’s the underbody area that I need info on, not the engine bay.
The pic with the orange arrow, ( that’s the back, front to the left, we are looking toward the rear right wheel). The blue dots are where I think the harness goes? But the gray circle highlights a wiring retainer, that’s mounted sideways. So does the harness stay inside of the frame and then turn sideways and enter the hole pointed at by the orange arrow?
Second pic, red arrow shows the front. The wires that attach to the double connector for the starter lock out, were routed along the blue line. I’m suspicious they were supposed to come from the front, out the hole you can see other small harnesses coming out, and along the green line to the connector?
Any help appreciated.

Anyone? Is anyone able to post a pic of the two areas I posted pics of so I can see how your harness is routed? |

the sideways retainer is for the wires going to the starter. your pic is correct, the harness snakes up the frame rail, goes into about a inch, inch and a half of never never land before coming out into the engine bay _________________

Thanks for the correction. I used to be a nice guy, then I ruined it by exposing myself to the public. |

Thank you! That was helpful, and makes sense. From just ahead of the wheel, the sheathing was hacked off and removed. I’ll add a small branch of sheathing at that point to exit all the starter wires and the gas gauge wire.
Anyone else have an automatic that can tell me the red/black and thinner black wire routings to the plug on my pic? The small nose belly pan has to be removed to see this I think. Any help appreciated. |
