We’ve all read about or seen YouTube videos on how to remove our door hinge pins, but I haven’t found any information on how to install new pins.
I’ve read about reaming, and first and second oversize hinge pins, but how do you know what size to install?
And if you used an air hammer to remove the hinge pins, you obviously don’t have access to the original VW pin-removal tool. Since I assume the new pins have to be pressed in, how is this feat accomplished?
Anyone done this job?

I have never done the door hinge but have done other jobs like it. You ream the door part 0.001"-0.0015" and the top and bottom body part 0.0005"-0.0008" smaller than pin. Lightly grease door part and place pin in a box with Dry Ice for 1 hour. Bring box with pin near door and using gloves remove Pin and place in hinge (have someone hold door lined up) and the pin should drop in (you need to move fast and have a Ball Peen hammer near by incase it gets stuck). When pin warms up it will lock in. When reaming have door shimmed in place and ream everything to the under size then remove door and ream the clearance in door hinge. |

Tim,
It's been a while since I did my passenger door but I went two sizes over. If I remember correctly, I had the hinge out and reemed the door and body side of the hinge seperatly. I then used a hammer and a punch and tapped the pin back into the hinge then put the door back onto the car. As you probably know, the pin has a swirl groove in it to allow oil to get to the bottom of the hinge so the whole pin is oiled. I had to look to find a set that had a nice groove in them. Some were basically non existant. I went 2 over because I didn't want to buy 2 reemers in case the smaller size didn't work. If it lasts another 40+ years, it'll out live me! If you decide to go 2 times over, you're welcome to borrow my reamer. _________________ John

Hi Tim, why are you taking the hinge pins out? Have they failed? Is this from leaning on the car door when it’s open? I haven’t seen this come up very often. Or maybe I’m not looking in the right place. |

No, I don’t lean on my doors.
My driver-side door has a slight sag, which makes it a little harder to close the door, due to alignment. Grabbing the door and pulling up, shows a little play in the hinges. Apparently, some former owner didn’t oil them over the course of years. After opening and closing a door that has been properly maintained, you’ll see the difference when closing.
It’s my understanding that there are a great many VW hinges in need of new pins. This is not an uncommon issue.
I found a place in Canada that rents out the proper hinge-pin removal tool. $25 to rent, $200 deposit. Operating the tool seems pretty easy, but installing new ones, reaming, oversive issues—I had some confusion on these issues, so I started this thread.

My drivers side door needs the hinge pins replaced too.
I have been following this thread for this exact reason. Two of my friends need to install new door pins as well.
We are all kind of holding off on the idea. Due to lack of experience in this field.
I have found that I can get the door closed from the seat. By rolling down the window a few turns and lifting the door at the rear of the window near the "B" pillar. This works a a temporary measure.
From the outside. I lift the door at the handle when closing.
Tim, can you share where you sourced the tool from?
I'd like to replace the pins within the next year. Lol!
Good Luck. _________________ I have learned over the years.

67, Avrparts.com seems to have the proper tool. Go to their sight and in their search box, type in tool rental. The tool in question is one of the first shown, and it looks like the original VW tool. It also comes with four pins.
$25 for a week’s rental. $200 damage deposit.

I would try to get the old pin out first. I had spare doors to play with so I drilled the hinge out and put it in the vice. Pin wouldn't move at all and I was about to shatter the vise. Bought a big C clamp and drilled it for a push pin. Bent the C-clamp and the pin didn't move. Bought an air chisel to drive it out, pin didn't move.
Did all this with heat and without nothing even started to move the pin. And this was with no door attached so I could position it any way I wanted.
I ended up just buying a new hinge.
Not saying your pin won't come out, just that I would get that far first. |

Squirt some oil in top "crack" and open and close the door a few times and repeat. You will see oil coming out the bottom "crack" and know its lubed. |

I just received an email from AVR. They can’t ship the rental tool across the border from Canada to the U.S.

Tim, one way to accomplish this is to put the pin on dry ice or in liquid nitrogen to shrink it slightly before dropping it in and tapping it with a punch to get the final bit. _________________ 1972 Super Beetle, Parked until adequate restoration funding is acquired in restoration!

To bad you were not closer. I have the reamer and a pins for both 1st and 2nd oversized. Why not buy a reamer and a new pin? I do not use dry ice. I instead stick the pin in a regular freezer for an hour. Right before grabbing it, I use a hair dryer and warm up the hinge leaves. The pin will drop in, maybe a small slap with the hammer to align it all. _________________ Jimbo
