I need to rent or borrow the special timing belt tools and VAGCOM over the Xmas holidays. 2003 diesel ALH. Anyone have any leads? I am in Maryland but happy to pay shipping each way.

If you don't need CAN-BUS functionality the $99 for a VCDS Lite registration and a $10 KKL cable from eBay/Amazon might be a good investment, especially if this is for a vehicle/engine you're keeping long term or taking on the road. Just a thought -- I was hesitant at first but it's been an invaluable tool with my 1.8T.

Thanks for the advice. Since I do not know anyone on those other forums I figured I'd check here first just in case I got lucky. Very Happy

VCDS Lite won't work--it doesn't have the "basic settings" mode that allows for checking injection timing, which is the main reason you need the software.

OP--there should be a sticky thread on TDI club, lots of folks share tools/VCDS cables on that site, and there are a ton of members in your general area.

Also, if you haven't done the job before, it's much simpler on a Vanagon than the stock vehicles that had the ALH. I can do it in about an hour on my Vanagon, where it takes 2 days on my Golf.

Let me know if that rental doesn't work out, I have all the tools too. My brother should be done with my spare cable by then.

Good to know. I've never needed that functionality, so I never looked to see if it was there.
