We are trying to collect ideas of what to see and what to do, so if you have any ideas they are more than welcome:
We are really looking for anything car related, and to meet people

Last time in LA we went to Malibu Beach via Sunset Boulevard.
Then we took a 30 min. flight to Oakland, and went to Yosemite.
Thinking Sacramento is closer to Yosemite but we stayed in San
Fran 2 nights.
Not trying to steer you away from LA but...It's a Great State

You'll want to research the VW shops, most are small, but some have Big Histories.
Berg was cool to walk around and look at all the historic photos.
Some of these shops are in very interesting areas of L.A.

If you miss the familiar sights of your home country while here in the US you can take a 3 hour, 205 km, drive to the town of Solvang which was settled by Danes in 1911. The town draws over one million visitors per year.

Your visit to Los Angeles would not be complete without seeing Grauman's Chinese Theater. It is where famous movie stars have left their footprints and handprints in concrete. It is only 6.3 km from the Petersen Museum.

Yup, nice little town. Occasional VW events in the area, but the big one is in late March, too late for you. Oh, and don't go there on your last day (the 9th) because the town will be invaded by 3000 bicyclists and you can't drive or enjoy much with the crowds!
It's a pretty drive from LA to there, either along the coast (Gaviota Pass), or a twisty but beautiful California drive up San Marcos Pass. There and back and a stay will be all day. |

Skid Row? Be careful where you sit -might be a needlestick up your butt from all the dirty syringes all over the place.
if you drive and park - lots of smash and grabs. It is a hobby over there.
Weather is very nice. You may get to enjoy. |

For your possible trip to Las Vegas (LV), take an extra day and drive out part of the way along historic Route 66 in California. You can leave the metro LA area on I-15 north, then turn off onto Rt 66 at Victorville. V'ville has a nice, small Rt 66 museum which is worth a visit. Follow Rt 66 north/northeast to Barstow, then continue on 66 east. Gets lonely very quickly once you pass Intersate 40. If you've seen the movie "Bagdad Cafe" from 1988, it was filmed at the cafe in Newberry Springs which is one of the first villages you reach after Barstow.
A few miles east of Amboy and Roy's Cafe on Rt 66 you can turn north to get to Kelso Depot with is very impressive, restored railway station. Part of the National Park Service. Continue north and get back onto I-15 east towards LV. Or, instead of turning north to Kelso, continue on Rt 66 east until US Rt 95 and take that north all the way to LV. Take 1/2 day to take a tour of Hoover Dam. If they still offer the "hard hat tour" based in the Visitor Center, take that; it takes you into the walkways inside the actual dam wall and down to the powerplant turbines at the base. I did that tour in 1996 and was very impressed.
When heading back from LV and you want to go on more back roads, head towards Pahrump NV on Rt 160. Before getting to that town, turn off southwest on the Old Spanish Trail Highway whcih goes thru Tecopa. It ends at Rt 127 which you take south to Baker, CA that is right on I-15 again.
In the past 20 years I've driven on most of these roads during weekend explorations from Los Angeles-based business trips. ON the little-traveled side roads through the desert, especially north of Kelso or on the Old Spanish Trail, pull over and turn the engine off. Get out of the car and listen to the quietness... |

This Sunday 3/3 the West Side VW club will be having their monthly meeting. They drive to, and park on, the Santa Monica Pier. Usually 50-100 old VWs, coffee, great sights (if a bit rainy this weekend), and GREAT people! Plan on being there from maybe 9 to 11, plus or minus. |
