I haven’t seen Tang in ages. That was a rude phrase in some circles, too.
You can put the “ does oil spoil ?” Question to bed with those two cardboard cans of Pennzoil

It is the bus of course, but that sweet striped hat has got to be it. What a time capsule! _________________ Gordon ~ '78 CEII Westy

I just wonder how many more I spy items we will find as you post the rest of the vintage photos you have and we compare with what we found in the bus _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Got the carb cleaned up a tad, replacing only what I had to while cleaning out all the passages. Now it all flows as it should and sealed proper. Saved all original screws and bits for Volksbits to dial in later
Then we went for a test drive.
Yes there’s still no brakes.
But we went anyways.
Video to come....

What a cool story here. Hilarious that the hat is still in it! All that stuff is pure time capsule treasures. They really had it stocked with everything. I’d use that oil for its first oil change. _________________ 71 Westy 1600 DP, all stock Bus 1

So I bet your all wondering what happened next....
Quite a bit actually!
We got the engine out for a refresh, and decided to just have a nice one built for it. At the moment that is going to be a 1800cc per aeromechs suggestion, with a rebuilt original trans (maybe a new ring and pinion) a fresh fuel tank, all new brakes from the booster and master to the wheels, and if we ever hear from wagons west it may end up loosing a couple inches in height overall.... but on to the pics as you requested!
Fuel tank and sensor were a mess...:
Telford cleaned up and modified the original sending unit for us, the tanks getting hot tanked and pressure tested for leaks at ACE radiator nearby, new filler neck hose and vapor lines, and the whole gas tank area is getting sound deadened...
Pulled the engine:
Then the brakes and transmission (was decided later or would have pulled it as a unit) booster getting rebuilt, new TRW master cylinder already in hand. Getting all new vacuum lines too.
Found this juicy goodness, so the original axles are getting new 12pt bolts and boots and grease...
Dropped transmission at transwerks:
And back to work I go... next is a new buttys bits at the pedal up front, a HD front sway bar, install the new calipers on the front wheels, and start tearing down the original engine...stay tuned! _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Great story and bus. I really have a soft spot for the white 71 Westys....
My only suggestion is not to lower it, please. It not only hurts the value but also it's usability and versatility. If you ever take it camping on the back roads, you'll be glad for the stock height clearance and smoother ride.
But I know, it's your bus etc.... Just use it as-is for a year or so and then make a decision on lowering it. It's such a nice original and complete bus and those are getting harder and harder to find.
Just my two unasked for cents.

Also I pressure washed and then chris cleaned with a brush the engine compartment which is going to get some LED lighting too...
Nasty:
Not so nasty:
No pics after chris went to town with soap and water but big improvement _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

This ones destined for the city and his 77 for the one or two dirt adventures he ever goes on. It will all be reversible (spindles and drop plates) so not hacking to much _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Keep those Cvs in driving position so your balls don’t fall off.
I can’t see your jack stand tops, but the axle tube is a lot more safer lift point than the sloped form of the axle carrier on the sway bar pic. Get that stuff right because your Bus can kill you if it conspires with Mother Gravity.
Sheet metal looks amazingly clean and nice! _________________ .ssS! |

Nice photo,
In Oakland at the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum. Home of the A’s. The Arena behind you in the picture shares the parking lot with the coliseum is Oracle Arena, where The Golden State Warriors played. That brings back good memories
Nice to see you guys getting that bus going. _________________ Keep on Busin'

Got a few updates, some with pics, some without...
Got a few boxes in the mail....
One box had this fabulous sticker in it...
So let’s start there:
The clamps didn’t come apart easy the first time so they were asking for replacement...we oblidged
(Moved that jack stand just for you Steve after this pic it got a solid resting place closer to the center of the beam )
New ones
Had to get creative to get my 27mm deep socket to fit, bopped the bottom out first, lifted it out of the way, then did the top. Nice n safe.
Due to some issues getting the right wheel bearing seals...not on the ground yet and only did one side so far.
Cleaned wheel bearings and CVs in some diesel and got one axle back together....
New filler neck hose and clamps:
New throttle cable and buttys bits linkage! Loved the 77 one, wait till the 71 hits the road. (Owner has a 77 as well) original solid core accelerator cable! Replaced with stranded style. Check out the originals rust!
Parked the spring a tad higher then Simon from buttys bits said to, to avoid driving a hole. Should work fine. If not I’ll get out the drill...
Clutch too!
Just in time!
Had an extra late bay style in hand, so gonna use that...:
Got a couple more updates but gotta post them in a few... _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Moving right along, the master cylinder and brake booster are in!
Had to track down these booger’s as I missed them somehow the first parts run.
Then I had to find a replacement for this hose:
The book says it’s a 17mm but I haven’t found any yet to fit, does anyone know what it’s for since the actual booster gets its vacuum from the 12mm behind it?
Got it all installed besides that 17mm 2 foot hose. It runs up the drivers wheel well seen here:
The rest came out fairly pretty:
Two new brake switches too, 3 pin.
More to come after tomorrow. Gonna be a busy day!
As seen in the first pic one post back, we got the tank back, so that should be buttoned up soon, shortly after some fresh sound deadener and a few new vapor lines... _________________ Stuart Zickefoose
