The boy is picking up an old civic to drive this winter to highschool.
Never having owned a front wheel drive car, can you put chains on the front to get throught the snow up the hill to home? Does it hurt the front drive/steering set up? 1 1/2 mile up hill to up hill driveway , eighteen inches already. Thanks _________________ "Albatross"! |

I've used cable chains on Civics in the past, worked fine.
But with 1/2 decent snow tires there's few times I actually needed the chains, if it won't do it forward then back up the hill. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I was so disappointed with my Rabbit's winter traction after owning Beetles that I went out and bought tire chains for it. Then like busdaddy I discovered reverse! Whoo hoo! But - be careful, chains in reverse is a recipe for a smoked clutch!
Ask me how I know... |

Have a 16 Golf and a 1 mile lane that is partially maintained. Left turn and big hill immediately) Dedicated winter tires do it most of the time, but have a set of cable chains just in case. One daughter has a newer corolla with same set up and other daughter has an Imprezza but just runs all season.
Front wheel drive is great, but winter tires and chains will get you almost anywhere. Biggest problem with the Golf is it's lowered, so more than 4 or 5 inches poses a bit of a problem since I starts riding up on top of the snow. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

My experience is that chains on just a 2WD truck will be better then a 4WD. I had a 2WD half ton Ford and one winter we had lots of snow and with no weight in the back but with chains on it went thru everything without any problems over every hill in my area. Now, it sucked on dry roads with the noise of the chains and those dry roads ate up the chains, but for snow chains are a pain to install but perform great. |

No shit. 70 degrees at the beach yesterday. I stopped at El Porto then Redondo just on a Beaver Watch.
We have more babes running around these beaches than the East Coast does with fall tree leaves falling !

All you Californication dudes will be begging for water when the rest of your state burns into oblivion. Any way will chains/chords/sharkskins damage the front axles? That is the question. _________________ "Albatross"! |

Not if installed properly, but just like any other car if they get loose and beat the crap out of a fender or get wound up in the works bad things may happen.
A Civic with chains on drives exactly like a non chained car, except noisier. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

The chains would just be insurance for when he gets home before the plow comes by and has to climb the long winding hill in virgin snow _________________ "Albatross"! |

Front wheel drives suck on a steep up hill! Keep those chains tight with two rubber bungie straps crossed over the center of the wheel. Another option is to put the chains on two spare wheels with the air out, get them as tight as possible and then pressure them up to tighten them. Toss them in the trunk, it is just as quick to switch tires as to put chains on in the snow.
A VW Bus with it's extra clearance and chains will go anywhere that a 4 X 4 will. |

A Civic, Rabbit, Corolla with a set of chains in the trunk will cost 1/3 of the price of a used SUV, get at least double the mileage, cost far less in maintenance and go further in bad weather. |

Thanks all , any one have experience with those shark skin type things? There supposed to install easier than chains, or maybe those chorded bungee type gripper things , never tried those either. Takes me all of ten minutes to put the chains on the 4x4 work truck. Just lying in the snow to get that finger tight on back side sort of blows. _________________ "Albatross"! |
