It is time to fix a nagging issue. I don't get heat from the front HVAC system. Fan blows but only fresh (cold) air. Moving the slider from fresh to heat doesn't do anything. This is fine in the summer, bad in the winter. I think the linkage (?) between slider and the flapper or whatever it controls may be wonky? Interestingly, a couple years ago I had the same problem but the HVAC only blew hot air, regardless of slider position. That was bad in the summer, good in the winter. Then one day, fiddling with the slider turned the hot air into fresh air and there it has stayed. I have never delved into the catacombs of the vanagon HVAC system and I'm both clueless and apprehensive. Any thoughts or tips? This isn't going to require pulling apart the whole dash and interior is it?

Ideally you grab a friend, leave them inside the Van while you head underneath with a flashlight, to watch the Heater valve operate off the cable as your buddy inside moves the Temp Slider slowly back and forth.
No movement of the Heater valve arm or cable ? Maybe it popped off inside the dash or the cable broke.

I'll get under there with my son today. We are trying to fix another problem, see other thread about ECU box. So it's a day to lay under a van in the rain!

You'll need to drop the spare tire to see the valve that is tucked up behind the radiator fan housing.

Also, unless you've modified and added Air Conditioning to the front Heater assembly, you don't have an HVAC system.

You have only a heated and fresh air management system.

If you find out the valve operates properly, try bleeding air from the cooling system (do a search on the forum on the Libby Bong)

Oh, it isn't bad at all.
Drop the spare tire, pull it out, lay an old blanket on the carrier, lie back on the blanket and look up.

You'll see the water valve. Have a helper move the hit/cokd lever as you see and feel if the valve is operating.
