Another point, this apply's to all vw T1 cases.

One of but not the only key thing to a long case center main life is to maintain a good crush on the #2 bearings. The bearing must stay tight in the saddle, when they loosen up the beating just snowballs especialy on a high reving engine. It is very common for the two 12mm center main studs to have the nuts loosen up over time and should be re-torqued as a maintenance item. This is not caused by the nuts just loosening on their own but because the case deforms under them (loctite will not solve the problem)..

As I mentioned earlier I swaped out the 12mm cener main studs and anchored them deeper with case savors and 10mm head studs. These will stretch more and will stay tight longer and also can use the 15mm head nuts that alowe's better socket to cylinder clearance so that you can re-torque them with the engine still in the car.

The Germans understood this and you will notice that all the other aircooled engines had 10mm main studs or turned down in the middle 12mm studs.

The type 1 was all about how can we cut costs in making the thing.

Search the name Rockcrusher- he drilled the oil passages bigger in single relief cases for performance builds.

You mean the guy who is in jail for exposing himself to kids in a park? Yeah, lets take his advice....

Is that what he did? Always thought he was an ass, but never heard what he got locked up for. Hopefully he’s getting what he earned in there.
