I believe the solenoid acks as a relay as said above you shouldn't need one.

please correct me if i'm wrong, but I see no need for a relay. the small wire from the switch connects to the starter solenoid and energizes the solenoid to make the plunger slam forward and make contact to turn on the starter. the small wire from the switch is really a low amp currant, the plunger in the solenoid is what carries the hi amp charge to start the starter motor.

A solonoid is a good idea, the load is circa 50 amps through the switch which is a lot. in theory the switch was designed to take it however when ever these switched fail it's always the last starter contactor which burns out from years of arcing. I personally don't favour Joe Leoni's relay solution - sure it will work fine from the outset but the relay isn't really designed to live outside under the car where it could get wet and suffer from atmospheric damage. Also, it the relay goes, it's a ball ache to get to it to change it.
I prefer the idea of putting the same relay wired on the back of the ignition switch in the car. The cable size to the started is fine so assuming your wiring loom is in reasonable shape it will be fine. |
