Long shot here. Curious about what after market company made this gear. I couldn’t find anything searching the internet.

Remember them?

Google came up with Mofoco.

Same part number.

Let's allow Roy to weigh-in here & advise us if MOFOCO's operations include gear hobbing.

The issue here is fit, right?
Too tight or too loose or not round, correct?

Again,
Mother VW is our savior.

Not only do they make them in different sizes to fit correctly,
They also make them round..

When you dig thru junk boxes or piles at swaps,
You usually find factory gears riveted to old cams.
We used to throw them on the ground so they fit in the scrap bin easier.
Cast cams just snap so easily...

Those factory gears were everywhere back in the day.

You drill out the rivets to remove the cam from the gear,
Then use a mill or drill press to ‘spot face’ a place for bolts to go.
(Like was done to the gear in your pic above)

Any chance the cam/gear that came from your motor is still around somewhere?
Maybe go dig in the scrap pile?
Tear down one of those old cores behind the shop?

Sucks all these things we -always- just threw away are scarce now..

Gee, wonder why?!? Laughing

That isn't one of mine BUT may have been made by the same company that makes mine(IN THE USA!!!)

My gears are -2

BTW....the real fun part of putting a new cam gear on an OE German cam is using the combo drill-tap for the holes by hand and doing it perfectly straight. I've done thousands over the years as we used to make all the performance grind cams for JC Whitney.....

Yep Clatter, I know about the OEM Cam gear to after market cam swap procedure. I have a +1 OEM gear lined up if needed. But it’s attached to a NOS
VW Cam. Seemed like a waist of Cam if this +2 is what’s needed. This bolt on +2 is easy to use for testing. If +1 is needed I will pick up the NOS cam and do the mod. Won’t know until we crack the engine back open.

What I ultimately wanted to know is. Is this a quality aftermarket gear to use should +2 gear achieve the proper backlash Think

The gear feels and looks really nice compared to other aftermarket gears. A real nice chunk of metal and it measured out nicely. It was only $25. The fact that it’s very rare to find a + aftermarket gear tells me it’s probably not shiny-chiny, maybe Taiwanese or domestic. I might be wrong on this but my opinion is 80s Taiwan parts had better quality control then today’s Chinese stuff.

I wonder if the stamp 8-71 on the gear actually indicates it was made in August of 1971?

Seriously, man,

If Xatie wants to go stomping around town,
Setting off car alarms,
And breaking hearts at every stop light,

I can build you a copy of my heater beater 1776.
Already have a case, 69 counterweight, unitechs, heater boxes, lessee..
What else we got here??

If you want something with heaters,
And some stomp to it’s tromp..
There’s another floor-sweeping around here somewhere.

Build the sweetest stocker for your sweetie you can right now,
Because pretty much everything should be different on That Other Motor..

Know what I mean, Vern..? Wink

Send me that set of Auto Linea heads your builder didn’t like?
I’ll fix ‘me and give them a porting..

Got a couple sets of heavy singles here,
Or a slightly-worn set of Berg duals to use.

Plus a set of swivel feet and a little-bit-worn E110..

You have a header,
(And hopefully a glass-pack Wink (!))

So far all we need is a set of cylinders and carbs..

I have some nice old-school Cima 90.5s,
But they are getting worn.
Will have to measure, but, maybe a ridge-ream and re-ring will do ‘em..

If you’re gonna be beating on it,
There’s no real need to be all anal and perfectionist about it..

All of this stuff was given to me so why not pass it along?

They have those $90 copy-of-a-copy China IDFs for sale.
If we had time to analyze them on the run stand,
Send back for replacements as needed if needed,
If we got them to work they would probably stay that way, right?

You the best Clatter. Thanks brother. The after market gear was just to have on hand for diagnostic purposes. Easy to bolt on to the Engle cam. We also have a stash of OEM cams/gears to use in an assorted range and a Brazilian +1 cam gear ready to bolt on. So we did some test last night. It appears the problem is on the crank gear. Found a tooth just a bit off. So went through his box of crank gears to find a suitable replacement. So hoping it’s not a line bore issue. The way the engine went together didn’t feel like it in my buddies experience. If it is. We have several cases in the bull pin if needed. Machining won’t cost anything.

Anybody have experience with SWAG crank gears?
We not using it. My buddy was just curious, if they were any good.

There has been an issue with woodruff keys being big..

Does the tight spot correspond with the location of the keyway?

Easy enough fix if so;
Just sand the thing down on the old surface plate..

That gear, heated, should just drop in place. I guess everyone knows that though.
