Hi guys,
This is the new member of my family:
Is a 73' automatic squareback. I just got it last week.
Cruising is great, but a hill is a great problem.
The kickdown switch is disconected (I'm working on that). I know that it should change a lot after that. But the strange part to me is that if I manually shift to 1 or 2, I don't get that extra power that I need (specially going up hills). The same happens will trying to drive in reverse. What's could be the problem?
So, I can drive in reverse, 1 or 2 but without the power that I expect.
Please help!! _________________ 58' PGSG

Start by checking the point gap and timing. Slow response is often due to the need for a tune-up.
Is this a dual carb or FI model?
In either case check the linkage to be sure you are getting full throttle.
Check the ATF fluid level (engine running, set in Park); if it's low it can slip.
NICE looking car! I had a similar Marina Blue '71. Fantastically practical car.
Did someone shave the side trim, or was there a non-USA model/option for chrome-less? |

Thanks for the quick answer Phil! I have always had vw with manual transmission. This is new for me.
Is a dual carb model. Don't really know yet for what type of market/destination.
I will check the ATF fluid level. Didn't know how to mesure it properlly.
I would say that is not actually a "slow response" when changing to 1 o 2. Is more like keeping the same power. I can go up hills in D, 1 or 2, but there is no change between the speeds. It's always slow.
Something similar happen to us while loading it into the trailer in reverse. It had no power to climb by it self in R. _________________ 58' PGSG

I had trouble at altitude and with a leaky and poorly adjusted MPS on the fuel injection. That took away all power in reverse; I had a hard time backup up a driveway! Downshifting doesn't create a great amount of power, but it still sounds like maybe yours is a little weak. Hopefully just a tune-up or carb balance. What altitude are you at? |

I'm at sea level. So that shouldn't be a problem. I will tune up everything and post the results. _________________ 58' PGSG

When you manually down shift into 2nd or 1st, does the engine RPM change, or does it stay constant. The same with reverse. If you are in a large safe parking lot and floor it in reverse, does the engine rpm go up, but you don't move fast? Power is subjective, what we want to look at is engine rpm in relation to movement. So are the engines rpms high, but you get little movement, or are the rpms low, and not affected by the gear that you are in? _________________ 69 road Bug 2110
