Nope - Do you think it needs it, the frame is pretty solid. It's bolted in in 3 places underneath on each side.
The bumper still needs work. We only had a few hours of fab time with GoWesty |
I had a heavy pipe bumper on the rear of my Splitwindow. After I added a tow hitch to the bumper I noticed that the holes on the frame where dished from all the weight pulling down on the bolts. You probably already have large diameter washers on the mounting bolts which is spreading out the stress points on the frame.
It seems to me that your new bumper, spare tire and other accessories will be putting a lot of weight on those three bolts especially on a bouncy road. You wouldn't want them to pull through the frame. Extremely difficult to repair out in the middle of no where.
An easy fix now, if you don't have any welding available, would be to bolt a flat 3-5mm thick metal plate over the mounting holes on the inside of the frame, redrill the mounting holes, this would help to spread out stress on a larger area of the frame. Or a piece of angle plate that is also so bolted through the side of the frame.
Just my 2 cents.
I'm sure others might not think this is nessasary or may have a better idea on how to reinforce the frame. _________________ Prosit!

W Wait a minute! You two are already well on your way. First I really enjoy watching your adventures, however I thought this was more real time, for all I know your half way round the marble by now.
Second what’s up with this 55 mph business. There’s a saying here in the US, “I can’t drive 55”... Please tell me that is just during the engine break-in (strange phrase that). An old worn out 1600 stock dual port is pushing our 1971 bay window @ 60 to 70 mph all day long. The engine runs cool and smooth between 3500 and 4100 rpm no problems. What don’t I (we in Samba land) know? Do the adventure wagons have that much wind resistance? Open question...
Safe travels and good health, I pray you are both well. _________________ 71 single cab, 67 deluxe bug (to daughter), 67 custom ragtop bug (sold to pay for restoration), 71 super (1st car, long gone) |

Tickets suck, did you have to pay a fine? Which made me think about your registration and paperwork. Will you be keeping the AZ plates and registration? Will you be re-registratering the bus in the U.K.? Will you have to pay for MOT inspections, new plates and paperwork? How does that whole paperwork thing work for international travel?
Sounds like just all the paperwork alone is going to get expensive. _________________ Prosit!

It's complicated. And Brexit isn't making it any easier. The best option for us was to keep it on AZ plates until we settle in one location, Plan 1 is currently register it in Aus, 2) Back in Jersey (UK) 3) return to USA
I'm not thrilled about driving across the world on US plates to be honest. You wouldn't have noticed but the license plate is intentionally the same number as our previous Kombi, which we still have the plates for _________________ Around The World in a VW - Follow the Docuseries

I see you have discovered a better saying: “it’s not the destination as much as the journey” , thank you for sharing yours. You have schooled me. _________________ 71 single cab, 67 deluxe bug (to daughter), 67 custom ragtop bug (sold to pay for restoration), 71 super (1st car, long gone) |

Ben and Leah,
I've followed your journeys with interest. As a traveler, I've admired your pluck and enthusiasm as you've made your way through the Americas. And as a bus owner, I've been proud that the VW community has lent you a hand through your many challenges. My young sons enjoy watching your videos and we were excited that our part of the world, the New York region, was the focus of your latest episode. So it was with real disappointment as we watched your characterization of our great city.
When you travel, you are guests in the places you visit. As such, I hope you will be more gracious when you travel to other parts of the world than you were with Harlem, a part of New York that is rich in history and culture. You chose to refer to Harlem, over and over, as a "ghetto" or "the hood" and some of its residents as "crack whores". That's not what I'd expect of a guest and certainly not the way the people of Harlem, who hosted you, would like to be characterized.
You could have focused instead on the legacy of the Apollo Theater, the history of figures such as Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston, and the deep pride New Yorkers have about Harlem and its people. Instead, you spoke with suspicion about its residents and spent your time talking about how scared you were to leave your vehicle unattended. You painted a negative picture of Harlem, one that is undeserved and demeaning.
I wish you good fortune on your journey. I only hope that you will be a good ambassador of the VW community. As a guest, when you encounter people that are different from you, or enter into a city that you are unfamiliar with, please have some humility. Try not to resort to terrible stereotypes. It's unbecoming and perpetuates intolerance. Please don't add to that ignorance. _________________ 69 Westy |

Thanks for your comment. I said in the video that Harlem DIDN’T seems like the ghetto and also stated that The “Crack Wars” have been over since the 90s. Don’t worry even Leah thought it sounded like Crack Whores.😁
I personally (and Leah too) very much enjoyed our visit to your great city and we hope that we’ll be able to spend more time there next time.

Thanks for your reply. According to your narration, you began with the assumption that Harlem was going to be a "ghetto" or there was a 'crack war". If you return to New York in the future, know that these phrases have racial connotations and are generally seen as ignorant. Similar to assuming that all Australians are like Crocodile Dundee. Or all Brits speak in cockney accents. Good luck on your journey. _________________ Around The World in a VW - Follow the Docuseries

You're welcome -
Here's an update and sneak preview of Season 2 -
Link
I wont be posting all of the off-season content on this thread, so if you want to keep up with what we're posting the best place is probably on the Kombi LIfe YouTube channel.
I will post any vids that is relevant to the travel series / build on this thread, and then Season 2 will be available publicly later in the year - Earlier on Patreon for those of you who are supporters of the series.
Have a good one guys

Hi Ben
Thanks for sharing your videos. It's hard to express this without sounding condescending, but you seem to have really matured since your first uploads. I really like your current stuff. You have certainly become more skilled at creating your media, but I think your experiences have changed your perspective on the places you visit. It's like watching through a different set of eyes.
I've got a few more to watch, so I'll save those for another night.
My wife and I had similar ambitions, but we (I) have decided it will be best to circle the globe in something that floats
Watching your pretty paint job get marred in New Orleans makes me so nervous to drive my bus anywhere if/when I paint it. While you are an inspiration to explore and travel, you're making me less inclined to take my bus "out there".
huh... it just occurred to me that I'm reluctant to take a bus worth less than $20k, but I have no problem sailing a boat worth $200k.
Good luck Ben. I'm excited for you, and I'll be following your adventures. _________________ ~Kevin
