Started fitting in our new floor pans but before we start welding the manufacture recommended sanding off the protective layer that it was shipped with, has anybody done this? It seems especially difficult around the seat braces. Is there another way to remove it or can it stay on and be painted over?

This should be in one of the vehicle forums....
This is the Performance Engine Section.
Anyway, I'm sure they mean to remove the coating just where you will be welding. Leave all the rest. _________________ If you would like to contact me, just email through one of my ads on here...

Steel wire brush on the angle grinder to quicly remove paint, yes, only where you are welding, the rest can serve as an undercoat. Fully sanding down the floor pan is quite a job! |

Only where you will weld.... It's something taught in welding class/science... Always make area to weld as clean as possible, means bright steel.... Also where you will attach ground clamp...

Use a flap disc on an angle grinder. It will take off the paint and leave the metal. _________________ '69 Karmy, '69 Camper, Meyers clone, '65 drag bug, 10.78 @ 128 (sold it) '51 Dodge farm truck,

Cleaning the parts to be welded is part of the process of ..welding.
Is this first time welding? Floorpans have to be fitted to the body, obviously before any welding. All the holes should line up.
Also, are you doing an off the pan job? or a slip in job? |
