We picked up some new floor pans from jbugs and have them all fitted and getting ready to install. According to jbugs they recommend sanding to remove the black rust protector they are shipped with. Has anybody done this? Is there another way to remove it other than sanding, it seems like it would be difficult especially around the seat braces

maybe take them to get sand blasted ? I guess you could use some type of paint remover chemical, but then after you need to make sure you get all that off before you paint it. I would spend a few hours with a large grinder and a wire wheel. |

Remove the seat tracks & replace them with the original ones! The aftermarket ones are horrible due to thinner metal & subpar stampings & will cause the seat to not fit/slide correctly. Inadequate welding will also cause the tracks to fatigue & separate from the pan. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

The only paint that needs to come off for welding is along the flange area where you will plug weld the pans. Is that what you are asking? You can use a rice cake like this

They also have them with a stud in the center to use in a drill/ pneumatic angle grinder.
You can also use 3" roloc discs like this, but if you aren't careful they also remove metal, and you don't want the area you weld to be thinner.

I wouldn't remove all of the EDP coating (electro deposit primer) the black stuff. Just scuff it before painting. Don't forget to use weld-through primer on the between the flange and new pan (in a can is fine) where you plug weld only. Use a good quality seam sealer inside the car and underneath before topcoating. Hope that helps. |
