This video popped up in my YouTube feed and is well worth a watch!
Not sure of the year of the beetle, but the registration plate suggests pre 1962.
It is dated 1971, from a popular TV programme called 'Tomorrow's World' and demonstrates a fancy new navigation system running on cassette tapes!
Loads of cool details, including showing the navigation unit and the circuit boards that can be replaced for different routes and it suggests that this might be useful for chauffeurs who are driving 'wealthy Americans' around country houses in Britain!
I was also fascinated by the background details, like the road signs, traffic lights, and other traffic (including a few split buses!)
See what you think, and let us know what catches your eye!

I would say it is a 62 or a 63.
It has a fuel gauge, 62 was the first year for that as standard, before 62 it was optional.
Also, it has the larger tail lights which started in 63 and ran until 67.
61 and down has snowflake tail lights.
It also has the small license plate light, that ended very, very early 64 (along with the peanut turn signals)
It has peanut turn signals, those ended in 63 (as mentioned above, they were actually ended very, very early in 64 model year production).
So, 62 or 63. _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"

that's michael rodd driving and I think the reg indicates a southampton car. he was on tomorrow's world from 1972. sadly the reg details aren't found on dvla records (if I've read the numbers correctly).
if the box under the dash needs an odometer drive how was that achieved - it would need a splitter to drive both the cars speedo one and the cas-nav?

Fascinating video.
There were paper navigation systems as early as the 'teens, with instructions printed on a roll that could be manually advanced as the driver moved along. The cassette system was much more sophisticated, measuring the actual distance traveled between instructions.
I was wondering how it could cope with unexpected obstructions, and obviously it couldn't.
I'm reminded of the first time I ever used GPS, in a rental car many years ago. There was massive construction all around the area which made it impossible to follow the instructions. That GPS didn't have a provision to recalculate an alternate route so it just kept telling me to make a U-turn to get back to the original route that was blocked. I got hopelessly lost and it was of no help. _________________ Gone but not forgotten: 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1966) - another 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1996) |

I remember adding a cassette to my 61 back in long ago time. It was an upgrade from my AM radio with an under dash FM converter box.
I recall self driving cars when I was a kid, while at Disneyland. I rode in them, lots of fun. Oh what the future would hold back then.
I still prefer paper maps over automated voice command directions however.
