I posted about this impressive German quality once before, but I wanted to reiterate this point again. Especially after a friend of mine saw a pic of my SB undergoing 'restoration' and he commented that he was always under the impression that VW beetles were "throw away cars",...
I can source a vent window rivet like this one from Mid America Motorworks (back ordered until January), but I am unable to find anything like the rivet washers,...and rivet setting tools that I've found seem to be kinda generic. I like other member's ideas of using a BB, or ball bearing best. Pics:

Isn't that a pretty rivet? How is that some folks are using pop rivets, when VW used a fastener as pretty as this?

Bugs deserve better reproductions,...
If anyone has another rivet washer like this one, I'd like to obtain it (my other vent window has a 'dumpy looking' rivet), in case I can reinstall the washers with the new black capped rivets. Thanks,
Todd.

Hi, if u google mushroom shaped rivets you'll find a variety of options in leatherware craft. Maybe u can find something close to original there.

Thank you, I'll give it a try.
Rivets, I have coming. That washer,...well, I don't expect to be able to find another.
Anyone run across one while they are rebuilding their VW vent windows, please let me know! I've saved this one, and I'd like to find another.
Thanks, I'll try more Google searches,...
Todd.

Hi,
West Coast Metric sell a complete Vent Wing Assembly, part #113-601C
Not sure what they use for a rivet... maybe you could find out the manufacturer and ask them. That’s assuming they use what your looking for.

Now that's MEXICAN!

I posted about this impressive Mexican quality once before, but I wanted to reiterate this point again: this is the genuine VW of Mexico rivet 1BM 837 648 in black color for the late Sedan window vent hinge (1996-2004).
Somewhere in my parts stock there is a bag with dozens of new VW washers...

As I stated previously, I have these coming:
https://www.mamotorworks.com/VW/product/domed-head-black-hollow-rivet-for-vent-wing-353378
They are PERFECT!
To reproduce what VW did in 1972, however, would require another rivet WASHER like the one I've pictured above,...I've never seen anything other than a flat, thin rivet washer.
If you have a rivet washer like the one above, please let me know.
Thanks for the advice though, guys.

Antonio, I'd be interested in seeing a pic of one of those rivet washers that you mention,...are they mushroom shaped like the black capped rivets you picture? If so, I'd sure like to get one from you,...
Not even sure if I can use them with modern rivets, but I'm game!
How do I shop your store? And do you only ship out of Mexico?

Does anybody have a picture of the best tool for this job? I've done the BB trick, but how did VW do it??

I've always imagined a custom set of Vise-Grips with a flat concave end and a BB-shaped round other jaw, but maybe it was more of something like an F-style ratcheting crimper?

With the numbers that they produced in a day, I’m thinking a hydraulic or pneumatic press.

I don’t know of a source for new washers for the bottom of the hinge, but many repair shops that have parted out VWs over the years have a surplus of those vent windows gathering dust.

I always assumed they did the window frame before it was installed in the vehicle with a press.

An appropriate sized punch works well if the window is removed from the car.

There is this thread with a tool but not sure how well it works for late-model Bugs

I've seen most of this in Samba searches. I have not seen that VW rivet setting tool,...I doubt that one can be found,...
I've seen a rivet setting hand tool, available online, that is intended for classic Chevy vent window rivets,...it's cheap so I might buy one and see if it looks like it will finish the black capped rivets that I have coming from MAM.
I cannot find a rivet finishing hand tool at our local Ace Hardware, just pop rivets, etc,...I've searched Home Depot also, but I don't see much in the way of hand tools to finish rivets.
I have located a 'lovely' stainless steel ball from my carburetor parts bin, and It's about the right size, at ~4.5 mm. It'll sure start the setting of the rivet, but it will not complete the final curl of the rivet's sleeve, so I will continue to look for a setting clamp, or hand tool.
Again, If anyone discovers any information about mushroom shaped rivet washers like the one pictured above, I'd sure like to hear about it! I don't expect for my rivets to arrive for at least a couple of weeks,...
Thanks! Todd.

Think I found what you are looking for. There is a hand held riveting tool on this page.
https://rivetsinstock.com/rivet-tools/solid-semitubular-rivet-tools.html

This one is a screw type press. Almost like a C-clamp. You would know better than I. Check it out.

Post back up if it is.
